Here is a question

By YellowJoker, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

So i’m very new to the L5R game, i started with the lcg but i did research on the old game and now i have a question. will they make clans during the game like the spider clan or not? if so that would be amazing but i can also see them not doing it because making a new clan would be hard. the only way i can think of them doing it is by a deluxe box.

Well no matter what i hope all of you are having fun with the game like i am!

No idea. I played Spider back in the day, but their creation and subsequent elevation was not entirely well recieved. The whole Daigotsu storyline developed from the Kotei and other player choices, FFG could set them up as a story consequence again, or just drop them in a deluxe box, or never mention them.

I think if they want to have a player driven story like the old game they should let players give the ability to do whatever. They don’t have to make spider again. depending on the player who won that player can make a new clan if he wanted.

That's completely wrong. It can still be player driven without giving the players the entire sandbox to play in.

Short answer is we don't know yet, and there are many many threads on this board that cover this topic. Super strong suspicion that Mantis will come back as a full faction, and there are references to people who became leading members of the spider clan in the old game. Feel free to dig them up!

However, Letting players "do what they want" does not make for good story-telling. Giving them a couple of interesting but restricted choices does, since you don't end up with someone trolling the entire community because they won and thought it would be hilarious to just choose the most ridiculous combination they could.

With respect, this is what was attempted in the old game, and the result was a number of odd story situations. By limiting player choices they are also limiting the potential absurdity of the plot twists going forward.

I agree and they should have limits to decisions

and i apologize i didn’t mean to give us every option we could desire. what i’m saying is they should give us a pool of options to choose from and from there make the story

I hope we get some control. I want to see scorpion win the coupe. Think it would be neat. I also never want to see the hundred years of darkness crap again or the fact that becoming emperor or empress suddenly makes a character dumb as a box of rocks.

Before the Spider, the Shadowlands were a playable faction since almost the beginning, even before Mantis (or rather, their precursor Yoritomo's Alliance). While the current storyline may end up diverging wildly from the original one, if we asume a roughly similar history, the Spider are decades away, anyway. So in all likeness we will see the Shadowlands Horde before that we see Spider Clan (if at all!) and several Shadowlands characters before we see a playable Shadowlands faction. In fact, we already have been spoiled one such card: Goblin Sneak.

As for the storyline, there were too many times were the writers had to bend backwards to accomodate both tournament winner decisions, and justify new setups. For me the biggest fail was when all Four Winds died stupidly so that one Imperial Dynasty disappeared just to leave the Throne open for a new status quo. This new version of Rokugan has the luxury of threading an already walked path. They have already changed things, and it seems they are holding thighter the reins of the storyline, which is really good. I see this more like an Ultimate version of Rokugan. If some of you are comic-book fans, you may remember how good the Ultimate comics were compared to the originals, mainly because the old continuity had accrued lots of strange stuff. The Ultimate universe was a blank slate and they were the best superhero comics in the market... at first. However, after several years of their own continuity, it also suffered from an accumulation of questionable decisions so that by the end, it was as preposterous as the original one. With this I don't mean to say is that this new Rokugan (which I jokingly call Bizarro Rokugan) will turn south, but that the writers will need to be really careful with every step and not lose sight of the big picture.

At this point, after much reflection, I fully expect the Mantis to be a major thing, even if not a major clan. I also expect Spider will return BUT it won't be for a while. Other new clans / factions both from the previous game and completely new entries are also on the table. If the game is truly going to follow a story these changes MUST be available to the writers.

For people who are against x clan - Don't hold AEG's story against the concept. If there is a way that Iuchiban, daigotsu, and Spider can be done well - give FFG the chance to do it.

I will reiterate my point. The idea of the Spider aka Shadowlands Infiltrators, makes for an awesome story idea, however I sincerely question the idea that a Shadowlands "faction" (AKA stronghold with mechanics), will function well within the mechanics of an LCG. Spider might do better than straight Shadowlands horde, but I would much rather see Shadowlands neutrals and in-clan tainted cards instead of a new faction, and let people decide if they want to win tournaments with a "tainted" deck or not.
