I think this is a quick question, but I can't find anything on line on this specific question.

I Chewbacca happens to get a surge on the red dice roll when doing slam can he spend it. I think slam only does the actual damage on the dice and ignores surges, but with the upcoming Chewbacca fix I wanted to get a definitive answer in the event it comes up.

I am figuring the fact it isn't an "attack" makes it more like "Grenadier"

That's correct. Just do exactly what the ability says, and don't do what it doesn't say.

Slam does not count as an attack, so that one surge you could roll is useless. I wish it wasn't, maybe it should do a strain or something.

figures with extra actions for damage are cool, huh?
