Ello Asty & Targeting Astromech

By HuwBacca, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If Ello Asty takes a Targeting Astromech, does he/she get to aquire the target lock provided by the Astromech if Ello Tallorn rolls? (Ello's special ability being a Tallorn roll is treated as a white manoeuvre)

Can’t have it both ways in this case. The maneuver is either red or white. If you use Ello Asty’s pilot ability, then Targeting Astromech will never trigger.

Agree with jmswood... and this has to do with WHEN it triggers.

Targeting Astromech triggers "after you execute a red maneuver" (text from card). Ello Asty's ability is a may (meaning you don't have to trigger it) BUT if you do, he triggers (and then changes) the talon rolls from red to white prior to executing. So that when you execute one with him, it is now a white maneuver.

So to sum up, Ello's ability says he MAY treat the Talon rolls as white. His 2 options would be...

Perform his maneuver, decide to not trigger his ability which would trigger the mech to acquire a lock and get a stress token.

Or

Perform his maneuver, decide to trigger his ability which would not trigger the mech, but he would not get a stress token and could therefore perform a target lock action or any other action.

You would be hard pressed to find a good reason to ever put Targeting Astro on Elly. The two abilities are anti-synergistic.

Great replies...thankyou!

I think I was just hoping to find a sneaky way to get a free target lock with this combo.

Thanks once again and may the force be with you! :)

Pilots who like Targeting Astro:

“Hobbie” Klivian - K-turn for Focus/Target Lock combo until your oppnent gets around to killing him.

“Dutch” Vander - Gives Target Locks to friends in spite of an awful dial. Might be good if Gold Leader had an EPT. Sorry, only obscure Scum pilots from the EU get EPT on a Y-wing because FFG never plays faction favorites.

Nien Nunb (with Stay on Target) - Similar concept to Hobbie, but more flexible and more expensive. Change your dial with Stay on Target to get at Range 1 of an enemy ship, execute red move, clear stress with Nien Nunb’s pilot ability, acquire lock with Targeting Astro and focus or boost for an action. Wash rinse and repeat. Pairs well with pattern analyzer in case you misjudge range to target.

I’m a casual player with some competitive experience. I’ve used these combos casually. I don’t recommend them competitively.

Braylen Stramm - Gives you a TL on red guaranteed with a chance for a focus as well if the roll goes your way.

Nien Numb, if you can tallon roll or K-turn so that you land at range 1 then you get the TL and ditch the stress so you can still do an action, add pattern analyzer and PTL and you can potentially turn for free TL then boost into range 1 before receiving the stress which you can ditch then push for a focus and still not receive a stress.

I've also tinkered with Sync Turret on Y-Wings, with or without BTL title. I haven't come to a firm decision yet on how much I like them but Targeting Astromech seems potentially useful for that.

K-Turns perhaps. But agreed that’s it’s not overly useful.

That's great...thanks guys for all your help, it is much appreciated! :)
