So, that new Last Jedi Trailer

By KungFuFerret, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

So yeah, there's a new one, with more details in it.

I found it interesting, not really super engaging though, not like the final trailer for Ep. 7. What did you think?

It seems their probably going down the Grey Jedi route, which I find....disappointing.

I really hope they don't give in to the Grey Jedi thing. One of the greatest strengths and weaknesses (let's just call it a defining feature) of SW is the duality of the Force and the black-and-white morality, which it draws both from the pulpy genre roots of the series and from some of the mythic overtones. Nixing that at the end really harms the structure and integrity of the saga as a whole. It would be a big mistake.

Also, double post to suggest a SQUEEFEST for Chewie and the Porg, who totally deserve their own spin-off movie in which they save the galaxy.

I demand Porgs be a playable race with an entire splat book just on Porgs.

I admit I was kind of mild about Ep VIII until seeing the latest trailer. Now I am super pumped to watch it. Although, I see most people having the opposite reaction.

I agree with a lot of the buzz that this trailer is a huge misdirection, but we'll know in just over 2 months.

Honestly, the knowledge that this movie is coming just after my birthday and just before Christmas is what is keeping me going these days.

I'm actually pretty excited for the potential of Gray Force-users. I don't think the duality is necessarily the defining aspect of Star Wars or agree that it uses black-and-white morality (ex: the Prequels, The Clone Wars, Rebels, etc.) though, so that's probably where our difference lies.

Yeah, I'll admit that I'd never seen the Porgs before, and knew nothing of them. But when that little guy suddenly started letting out his little chirpy "roar" of battle, I giggled out loud. It definitely had a huge cute factor for me.

I count myself fortunate to be receptive to cute stuff. It's just such a simple, sweet way to add a teensy little more happiness to life.

I do feel bad for thinking the Porgs are ultimately cuter than the Ewoks, though. I wrestled with that decision for some time.

Eh, I think the Ewoks had the problem of they clearly looked like people in costumes, and had the awkward movement of someone with issues moving around anyway due to anatomy, coupled with a full body costume. Some of them looked adorable, like the little Ewok cubs you see while 3PO is giving his story. (That little one that hides it's head in fear when 3PO mimics Vader always gets me), but for the most part, for me anyway, they look just a little too....off, to be cute. The Porgs benefit from being fully rendered digitally, so they can be more easily animated and have it look natural.

Plus, I found this funny, and she's a fun Star Wars fan/critic. If you like dry sarcasm humor, which I do.

Aaaaw, that's so sweet! I swear, it's totally the little (or in this case, big) things that make all the difference.

FIFTEEN MINUTES UNTIL PORG!

Yeah, I find it funny, because her usual youtube content is very dry, monotone wit and sarcasm. She intentionally goes for it as part of her persona, so to see her just lose it and get all giddy and giggly amuses the heck out of me. :D

I am strongly considering screaming "FIFTEEN MINUTES UNTIL PORG!" in the theater when I go to see the movie for the first time.

On a side note, are the Porg's sentient? Or are they sort of like Momo from Avatar: The Last Airbender, in that they are still an "animal", but a very clever one?

I hope it's the latter, because you probably can't keep a sentient as a pet.

Or... say... Salacious Crumb, the Kowakian Monkey-Lizard .

I remember reading that there's in-universe controversy about the sentience (or not) of the KML.

And the most OG of OG's, Jabba the Hutt, don't play by no rules, anyway.

Man, that reminds me of a great photoshop I saw way back in undergrad of Jabba with a bling-dollar necklace and a Blood (I think) headband. It may have actually been titled "The Original Gangster."

I liked the trailer, and I'm fully expecting that it's been edited to be deliberately misleading.

Sadly, there do seem to be a bunch of neckbeards preemptively complaining about how this will just be another re-hash film, this time based off of Empire Strikes Back.

And being a fan of the Potterverse, I'm well used to seeing/hearing fans running off half-cocked with crazy theories based upon the flimsiest bits of evidence. So pretty much unless it's something from the director or the script-writers themselves, I'm putting all those "grey Jedi" theories in the rubbish pile where they're more than likely going to wind up anyway once the film gets released.

I'm looking forward to the film, as I very much enjoyed TFA (though I do think they hammered the nostalgia button a little harder than was really necessary).

While I'm not a neckbeard, nor am I frothing about the comparison to ESB, I can't help but notice this movie has AT-AT's, and a really icy planet. And it appears like there is a Resistance base being attacked, and the people will have to scrabble and escape the onslaught. So yeah, at least from what we've been shown in the trailer, their concern isn't entirely without merit.

Side note: Is it just me, or do these AT-AT's look like their front legs have "gorilla-knuckle" hands? Like their walking on their knuckles, instead of just flat discs? If that's the case, I suspect we will see a scene where they use them to either climb steeper slopes, or use them to tear down entrenched defenses, that their guns just can't damage due to resistance.

Your gorilla comparison is apt and absolutely spot-on. I was bored last week and happened to read an article on starwars.com about the designs for some new vehicles, including that walker, and the guy basically said, "I wanted to make a gorilla into a walker to show how the designs had evolved since the Empire." Or something to that effect.

Yes, those colossal walkers do walk on their "knuckles". And, for the record, they're not ATATs either. They're AT-M6s, and they tower over the ATATs, which you can actually see in the trailer, given that there are a couple of ATATs interspersed with the ATM6s..

Make that “a really salty planet.” Crait is covered in a thin layer of salt. It made its first in-story appearance in Leia, Princess of Alderaan , where

it was Home to a base for the fledgling Rebel Alliance. Some detective work by a young Leia, not yet part of the Alliance, led her there as she was trying to solve a different mystery. Once there, she found Bail and discovered her parents’ involvement with the nascent Rebellion.

Yeah they totally cut that trailer to make it misleading.

Those AT-M6s are 50% taller than standard AT-ATs it seems, nice beast :-)

That doesn't help to counter the concern that they are trying to rehash ESB. They might be bigger, and have a different number code, but come on, they're AT-AT's for all intents and purposes. The fact that "they're bigger" doesn't really change much. It didn't really change much for the Starkiller base in Awakens. Even Han commented it's like the Death Star "just bigger".
