So I was playing defending, and rolled an evade, and my opponent rolled a surge while playing as Mak Eshka'rey, who has the surge ability "critical hit". We weren't sure weather my evade canceled his ability, which raised another question, do surge abilities use the surge. We are pretty much asking how surge abilities work
Surge abilities?
End of Step 4. Each evade cancels one surge.
Step 5. Spend surges.

Thanks for the help.

I have a question about the timing for Power to Shields. In your (really quite incredible) post on timing it states in "Step 7":
* Defender and friendly to defender
- Power to Shields (last chance just before step 7 for Pierce, and anytime during step 7 for other of the listed keywords)
I'm not sure I follow the distinction in timing for Pierce. I guess the simplest way to ask is to ask "Can Power to Shields be triggered to neutralise pierce after the attacker has chosen to use the Vibrosword?"
Pierce is not a symbol or accuracy. Pierce is taken account during step 7.
A hero with Vibrosword can also wait until step 7 to activate the Pierce 1 ability, but the attacker has to choose first, so Power to Shields can be used as a response.
