Have Yet to Fly the Wookie Ship Thing

By j_man_04, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Would this be do-able at all? Mainly, just trying to keep Poe alive long enough to kill the enemy's most threatening ship.

(98)

Lowhhrick (28) (34 total)

  • Selflessness
  • Breach Specialist
  • Nien Nunb
  • Hull Upgrade

Poe Dameron (33) (40 total)

  • Intensity
  • BB-8
  • Autothrusters
  • Black One

Ahsoka Tano (17) (24 total)

  • Veteran Instincts
  • Rey
  • EMP Device
  • Captured TIE
  • Sabine's Masterpiece

I'm personally not a fan of the captured TIE. I feel like it's a lot of points for a ship that explodes with a strong gust of wind. Rex without any upgrades works because 14 points isn't nearly as much. The wookie gunship is fun and intensity Poe does alot of great things. I like running comm relay on him to carry an evade around with me thou.

The list can sort of keep Poe safe, but not really. A BB-8 and Intensity Poe likes to be nimble and dodge arcs. That's what will keep Poe alive best (and he'll need a tech slot card... Primed Thrusters and Comm Relay are both solid).

I don't know how important Nien Numb is on Lowhhrick. It's pretty cool to gain access to that 5 straight, but I don't think it's that useful. Likewise, I think there isn't a lot to leverage Ahsoka. She's great with a high-value Ghost since the marginal value of one more action is a lot higher. Here, action stacking won't be quite as effective. Also, the current high PS metagame is pretty hard on Ahsoka.

So what the list needs, I think is more offensive punch. A Rage-Recruit Wookiee does that very well. Here's what I'm thinking about: While Lowhhrick does have a useful range-1 ability, don't feel too obliged to use it. Poe should feel free dance out. The Liberator has a 180 degree art with full rerolls and focus; pretty solid turn-after-turn offense. Lowhhrick isn't that strong of a punch, but Wookiees gives him more offense than Nien/BreachSpec. The total list is 99 points, so as large of a bid.

Lowhhrick [Selflessness, Wookiee Commandos] (30)

Wookiee Liberator [Inspiring Recruit, Rage, "Chopper"] (28)

Poe Dameron (PS9 Version) [Black One, BB-8, Primed Thrusters, Intensity, Autothrusters] (41)

Thanks for the insight. Captured TIE usually isn't one of my go-to's but I thought that having two ships that can't be targeted would help me set the tone of a game. I like the inspiring recruit/rage combo with the Wookie Liberator. Definitely, has more firepower than my original list.

All the rage in the VASSAL league for a good reason: 3 Liberators with Expertise, Tactician, and Breach Specialist!

@jwilliamson12 - A couple thoughts, as I've run the ships/pilots in question a lot:

  • Ahsoka is pretty **** cool, but she really needs the protection of Biggs. There are just too many PS9+ pilots flying around right now for her to be safe.
    • Side note: Ahsoka with Sabine/Seismic Bomb/Scavenger Crane along with Biggs and Miranda or Nym is pretty awesome
  • Intensity Poe with BB-8 needs either Primed Thrusters or Comm Relay (I prefer PT), or he's fairly nerfed
  • Rage/Inspiring Recruit on a wookie does do some good damage, but at too steep a cost. Rage ends up being a EPT which costs 2 points and a crew slot, in reality, because it really needs the Inspiring Recruit. I'd rather have Predator or Expertise.
  • Against other PS9s, I think you need at least a 3-point bid for Poe to feel fairly confident you can move last. It's local-meta dependent, so 2-points might be safe, but I would rather have 3.

I have room for PT, but I'm curious why he's nerfed without it. Without PTL, he's not going to be stressed like usual. Is it to give full flexibility on the dial, knowing you can still BB-8 next turn? I like it, and can definitely add it if this list stays as-is. Just wanted to make sure I get the reason behind including the upgrade.

Primed Thrusters allows you to BB-8 barrel roll when you reveal a green while stressed, yes. And that's important for getting a focus or evade from intensity. Just as important is that Primed Thrusters allows Poe to Tallon Roll or K-Turn, and follow that red move and stress with boost for a focus or evade. Being able to turn around while still getting tokens is a major reason this Poe gets played.
