Don't assume it works the same way it does on video games or even real-world devices. Making a large red button on top is much easier to show on-screen than triggers molded into the stick, and thus would be preferred by the director for a dramatic moment in the film (especially when the rest of the shot is black glove on black yoke - the large red button really stands out).
But, let's take it a step farther. Let's assume there are triggers. I don't see them, but they could easily be hidden by his gloves. How do you know the buttons would activate missiles? What if it just activates linked-firing of the cannon, while trigger pulls activate single-firing? As per the old X-Wing games, that would allow for a more powerful shot at the expense of rate-of-fire. Until we see the movie, or at least a trailer that shows the Silencer firing some other sort of weapon, claiming it should have missiles is purely an assumption that is not based on any actual evidence.
To aid your point....
Most mounted guns have a double thumb trigger, for safety.
And the Spitfire, arguably the best fighter of WW2, had a single thumb trigger.
Everytime I watch the trailer...I be like...

I think you're reaching...
After bieng über-hyped by the TFA trailer, then being utterly disappointed by this failure of a remake, I must say I'm not really reassured by this new trailer.
We got the "new ESB" bits : AT-ATs, Jedi training, ... And now some Pokemons : the furry Porg and the new Crystal evolution of Evoli ![]()
And for now, I'm really not a fan of Chicken "Luke" Skywalker, afraid of his pupil's powers. I see why Hamill had a problem with the way his character was depicted in the movie.
Let's just not hope for anything, and maybe get a good surprised this december.
Everyone is going crazy about the Missile slot being stolen from the Silencer when I’m still trying to figure out why the x1 has a Missile slot at all! Did you see ANY TIEs fire anything like a warhead in the OT? Nope.
But im glad Bombers get all those slots because Deadeye plasma torp Bombers are awesome.

One, Pokemon isn't plural. Pokemon refers to one or several.
Two, you're really hard to please.

Well, won't do that mistake again, thanks for the correction.
In what way am I hard to please ?
I think a thoughtful, cowardish luke makes perfect sense.
Lets see: the OT was all about his rash decisions putting him and his loved ones in danger. He was already very calm and thoughtful in jabbas palace and when talking to leia at the end.
Every instinct he had led to the demise of his friends: biggs dying. Vader died. Leia was in grave danger. Han tortured. All because of him, the "chosen one". Then his nephew, whom he trained(!) Did exactly what he was supposed to prevent and took vaders path.
His friend han died because of it. A lot of people did.
Things like that change a man.

Being cautious because things have gone bad once isn't the same as chickening out. Even Ben Kenobi wasnt like this, and the error was arguably bigger. But on that part (Lukes personnality), I'll wait for the movie before saying more about it.
I doubt Vaders death was hard on Luke; he ended up saving his fathers soul. One cannot hope to get redempted from so much evil without paying it with his life.

It was hard for me to type what I did, hence adding the “arguably”. P-51 is so..perfect.

He most likely felt the Starkiller base firing too so is fully aware of what potential not only Kylo has but also the resources he likely has at his disposal.
As you say, he legit trained the next Darth Vader and likely feels guilty for pushing him into the dark.
Remember, Luke likely believes he is the last Jedi and he didn't exactly get the full Jedi Academy training like Obi or the others did, he had to wing it, based on his crash course with Yoda, that is straining.
Also, can we all acknowledge that Luke didn't actually do anything on his own prior to this?
ANH
Before the droids, he worked on a farm, helping his dad.
He let R2 escape and only found him via C3PO.
He got ambushed by Sand People but was saved by Obi.
Han helped him with transportation.
Leia saved herself once Han destroyed the door controls.
Red and Gold Squadron AND HAN set up/died/handed a straight shot for Luke at the Battle of Yavin.
ESB
Saved by Han on Hoth.
Has his X wing saved by Yoda
Loses to Vader (and his hand)
Saved by Lando/Chewbacca/Leia
RotJ
Leia saves Han
Leia saves herself from Jabba
Han saves Lando
Han/Leia/Chewbacca and the population of Endor shut down the shields.
Luke then stands around and watches everyone die as they tackle a fully functional battle station.
Luke just about knocks Darth over, which is essentially a death sentence since he has the mobility of a dalek in RotJ.
Darth saves Luke from the Emperor
Lando and Wedge destroyed the second Death Star.
Point is, EVERY STEP OF THE WAY Luke has had help, except now as Leia joins the Repubic, Han/Chewbacca go back to smuggling and Luke tries to restart a religion, on his own. . with his track record. . it really is no surprise he is found hiding on a rock. He can't mess things up if he doesn't get involved.
So yeah, he is scared. He has a side role in a film, a critical one at that and so far all side roles have been at least helpful, unlike him, who, in the trailer, falls over at least once. Now we have Rey who has the power level of Goku, more plot armour than Superman and she is looking for Luke to help, like he is some God of force abilities when in reality he could barely put together an IKEA shelf unit with clear instructions.

Nice debate going on.
I wouldnt discard luke so easily though.
What we see in him is a very complex yet simple hero. The point of him, at least for me, is that a lot of people die to bring him into position.... and the he does what noone else could.
After all, ALL other rebels failed their shot or the approach on ds1. He does, with help of his gift, the force, the 1 in a million shot.
And then he performs his greatest deed in redeeming his father who seems way past redemption. And that against all odds, yodas opinion etc. That was perhaps 1 in a billion.
So, he is a hero. He just needs help because he has flaws, unlike the op mary sue jumpmaster... ääh... I mean rey.

Hmm, if Luke procreated, say she would have the force from Vader, would you not, erm?
