Snow Wookiees: New article about the Dawn of Rebellion Sourcebook

By Underachiever599, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Just thought I'd give you all a heads up, we have a new Dawn of Rebellion article, and some big news. 4 new species, six universal talent trees. The talent trees include a Retired Clone Trooper tree, and one of the new races is the Gigoran, aka "Snow Wookiee"

Was just reading it... amazing new direction and the book became wven more useful than I thought it would be.

Holy ****.

I mean, I'm not a girl who likes to swear, but holy ****!!!!!!!!

I've been after more Universal specs for years , ever since EoE came out (our main house-rule is that you can't take non-career specs, so this stuff is just... I mean, ****, this feels like the original Unearthed Arcana when everyone had Drow Cavaliers and Deep Gnome Barbarians. Game-changing stuff.)

And meh, I hate the cartoons, but all this crunch is gonna be MarcyVerse gold . I'll have a ton of emails when I get home.

Clone PCs. Holy ****.

Tell me about it :) . I've been waiting for more Universals forever, too! I hope the Pirate is good. Already we're seeing some good stuff in the Veteran spec (that's what I'm calling it, because I dislike the lengthy name "Retired Clone Trooper").

Wonder what the others are? I'm expecting at least one new Force-Sensitive spec, that's three. That leaves us with three more unknowns! This one book triples the number of Universal specs!

However, I notice they're still claiming a Q4 release which...I'm not seeing how they're gonna make it. The book is still In Development , which means bare minimum we're looking at 74 days left before release, and that's if it's a perfect production and moves to the printer, like, NOW. That puts us at December 21 release. Any longer than that and we're into January.

My head actually hurts, Absol. And yeah, it sounds like I have some serious thinking to do as how my game is gonna incorporate this stuff (the only thing I know is that it is gonna incorporate this stuff!).

Free-willed clones aren't a MarcyVerse thing, so 'Veteran' sounds about right... kind of an upgrade from 'Recruit' really, only instead of 'survived base-camp' this is 'survived three tours of duty'.

Or should free-willed clones now be A Thing? I've been thinking about that since we started, but nobody cares about them so I've never really developed it...

But six career skills...? Holy ****.

One player's been hassling me for Imperial characters for a while now, seeing as we have two actual Jedi. I wonder...?

Kudos to FFG for reeling in people like me who wouldn't watch 'Rebels' with a gun to my head. This is must have . This is Absol-utely the direction I've been wanting FFG to take this game.

Maybe...ooh! I have an idea! So, maybe free-willed clones always could have been a thing, but the Republic/Imperium and Confederacy/Jedi have been purposefully making them NOT free-willed so they could have their perfect soldiers. And at some point, a spy or disgusted doctor created a few batches without that inhibitor on their growth.

Gives some new moral questions in there.

EDIT: And everyone here knows my name, Marcy, you can use it if you want :) .

Jo's player will be babbling incoherently at the mere prospect of that. She's our oldest character and kinda topped-out at this point, unless she goes into things like Entertainer that don't suit her.

The player would probably sell vital organs for the prospect of the character having 3 Force Dice.

Cheers Phee, it feels really weird not doing do. :)

That's pretty much exactly what was on my mind. (You did read my mind, right? I mean, you have 4 Force Dice and I'm a mundane, so it can't be that difficult? :) )

This is a world where robots have feelings and are fighting for civil rights, but everybody just slaughters clones without any remorse whatsoever.

'Game-changing' in more than just crunch, I think...

What? Who told you I'm actually Kemna? It's a lie I tell you! Completely not true! Who would even say such a thing?

...It was the cactus, wasn't it?

Traitorous cactuses....

Edited by MonCal

And so began the great cactus clone purge where innocent cacti were needlessly slaughtered in the name of the greater good.

NNNNOOOOO!!!

I didn't mean it...the poor cacti :( ... *holds Auna close*

Order Pointy Plant issued.

I'd say the cactus is merely naïve and honest, and not intentionally traitorous.

So no need for any blood sap to be spilled.

Besides that 'Grey Jedi' post about equating 'Light side= Law' and 'Dark side=Chaos' pretty much convinced me that you were either my younger, cuter clone, or you were reading my mind.

And as much as I want it to be the former, I'm sure it's the latter...

... weird, awkward flirting aside ;) , it's interesting that they seem to be moving from the generic to the world-specific.

I mean, they clearly could have (and probably should have) made a 'Veteran' spec rather than the clumsily-named 'Retired Clone Trooper'. But that was evidently a design choice. So is that tree restricted to actual clones, or (for example) can snow wookiees and other species get it? Or will 'clone' be a sort of 'species' in the way Corellians and Mandalorians were?

We've never had a spec that was race-specific before. Is this in general meant to represent a veteran squad fighter, available to all? Or not? After all, the EOE and AOR specs were quite neutral - they could apply to an Imperial game as much as the default 'plucky rebels'. A Soldier is a Soldier no matter who he fights for. A Pilot is a Pilot whether he's an Ace or a Smuggler.

And so often we have told newbies not to be hung up on the names of specs - taking 'Thief' doesn't necessarily mean that your character is actually a criminal who steals things - he could just as easily be an industrial spy or private investigator with these Skills and Talents.

Even the F&D book used the old 'Jedi' classes of Guardian, Sentinel and Consular, but (in the context of the rules rather than the MarcyVerse) even these are not tied to actually being a 'Jedi'.

So this very much seems to be a shift in design, no? (That said, I'm expecting a side-bar that says 'oh, go on, take this for your Snow Wookiee if you really want to! ')

Hey, I told you that theory of mine over a year ago, so it shouldn't have been much of a surprise :P ! In fact, I've got a great (and in-character!) explanation for how Kem sees the Force as Law/Chaos that I've been saving, so...

And while being a (free-willed!) Marcy clone would be neat, I do have to admit that it is the latter option...

EDIT: And I can't believe that they'd put an actual limiter on who can take a spec. I mean, we KNOW (or at least we would, if we'd watched The Clone Wars :P ) that there were non-clones fighting in the Republic's armies, too, they just typically had Officer positions. But they weren't entirely absent.

I'd be shocked if they limited that spec to only humans, or especially only clone humans (if that becomes an official "thing.")

Meh, you only think you're free-willed!

<insert evil laughter!>

(I was maybe gonna make a lame joke here about 'executing Order xx', where xx was a number greater than 66 but less than 70... but honestly that would take the weird, awkward flirting to Banhammer levels...)

I think I need to turn in and get some sleep before I say something we'll all regret. :(

So, um... yeah, 'Snow Wookiees'. Discuss.

Yeah, maybe let's agree to leave it off here for now :) ? Night, Marcy! Sleep well!

And yet you provide no direct link. You FAIL at Internet! Good day, sir. I said GOOD DAY!

***EDIT***

Okay, now that I've read the article - the Clone archetype is kind of cool, but the only problem with going with that class? Is there a Sig Ability also in the book? Several campaigns ago, back in the old D6 days, I played a Clone Stormtrooper that went wrong somehow. If I were to build him in today's engine, he'd totally be a Heavy and while he did run around with a Vulcan Machine Cannon occasionally, he also did chop TIE fighters in half with his mighty broadsword, so the Soldier Sig Abilities are spot on for him. I'd hate to lose that if I went with the Clone archetype.

. . . . well, if I were still playing him, that is.

I'm thinking it's just a regular Universal Specialization, just like the Recruit, Mr. Penguin. So, he could still be a Soldier, just also a Retired Clone Trooper in addition.

At least, that's what it sounds like from the article. The fact that they added two additional career skills may mean I'm wrong. I hope I'm not, though.

I am SUPER keen for this book. This is when my current campaign is set so I am looking forward to the content.

I am so keen, I thought I might even pre-order from FFG...until I saw the shipping cost to Australia:

I guess I will have to wait until my FLGS has the book...
