Admonition - How does it actually work?

By Hawkwing, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Alright let me get this down because I may have not understood how Admonition really works.

If my opponent spends an accuracy on one of my defense tokens, am I able to discard that defense token with the Admonition title card?

Can I use a readied defense token twice whn I have Admonition: Redirect damage + discard the Redirect in order to cancel a die?

I was just reading up on how attacks were resolved in the Cannot Get Your Ship Out blog and stumbled on this question.

Both is allowed. Because the Admonition title does not say spend but discard. An Accuracy only prevent the opponent from spending it, but not from discarding it.
And you can spend the same token only once during each attack. But nothing prevent you from discarding it.

1) Yes. Accuracies prevent you from spending a defense token. You are not spending with Admonition, you are discarding .

2) Yes. Same idea: you spend it once, and then you discard it once.

Well, good to know when I use it next time :)

But what do you do if you use an exhausted defece token? Do you spend it a second time or you discard it? If you discard it, does that mean it cannot be blocked by an accuracy?

You discard it. Then you choose a die and it goes away like it was never there. If you discard it, it cannot be blocked by an accuracy. Admonition is awesome.

That is exactly what you do with Admonition.

There are two ways of 'using' a defense token. The first is spending , the second is discarding .

Spending is "If this token is ready, flip it to exhausted. If it is exhausted, flip it to the supply. You can't do this as the defender if its been targeted by an ACC result, unless you allow yourself to do so by ECM."

Discarding is "doesn't matter, throw it to the supply."

Spending can result in effectively discarding, but that does not mean that Spending is discarding. Spending is Spending, and Discarding is Discarding.

That's where you get little niches like, "You cannot spend the same token twice in one attack." But you can totally spend it, and then discard it, as long as your ability (like Admonition) specifies discard and not spend .

Lost a game at a big tournament due to not knowing this. Next time I'll scan my list for anything I am even a tad uncertain about and ask the TO or marshall about it :b

I had a friend of mine try to discard all 4 of his defense tokens a few weeks ago. He was not happy when I told him he couldn't do that. It was kind of weird too because he's been playing as long as I have. In fact he beat me the first time I ever played Armada.

Yep, that's another side of it. You can spend as many different tokens as you want as a defender, but because of the "While Defending..." word, you can only Admonition-discard once per defending opportunity.

If they want to discard 4, tell them that's cool and all... You'll just Reroll with your Demo's Ordnance Experts until they all come up Hit/Crit. :D

That normally quiets down the protests.

I had to follow that with an explanation of how XI-7s interacts with Advanced Projectors. He had a very bad day.
