Cancel Effect

By Hordeoverseer, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Just a simple quick question where I can't seem to find after the search. When using a card that cancels an effect, is it everything after the "Action:" text. For example, if Spies in Court was cancelled, does that mean the dishonouring doesn't happen?

Thanks

The cost is always paid. When you read an ability it follows this design

Action: <cost / restriction> - <effect>

So if it is pre-dash then it is still done, even if cancelled. The post-dash is what doesn't happen.

Follow up - if someone plays a card like Banzai! and it is cancelled, does it still count towards the Max 1 limit?
(I believe it does, but I don't remember so if someone can remind me I would appreciate it)

Also - if Banzai is cancelled, does it trap the opponent if they spent the honor to resolve the effect twice? Or is that cancelled too?
(I have seen this played such that it does trap the opponent to lose the honor if they want to resolve it twice and it gets cancelled, but the option to do so is after the dash, so I think it shouldn't)

Yes it does count.

Quote

If the effects of a card or ability with a maximum are canceled, the use of the card or ability is still counted against the maximum.

The sequence of playing Banzai!:

  • Announce playing Banzai!
  • Step 5: Choose a target
  • Step 6: Effects initiate (if canceled, stop here)
  • Step 7: Effects resolve - The target gets +2 mil. You may lose 1 honor. If you do, continue:
  • Step 5b: Choose a target (can be same or different)
  • Step 6b: Effects initiate (if canceled, stop here)
  • Step 7b: Effects resolve - The target gets +2 mil. You may lose 1 honor. If you do, nothing happens.

Losing 1 honor to "resolve the ability twice" is an optional part of the card's effect, not a cost.

Banzai! can be canceled in step 6 (before any effects resolve) or in step 6b (after one target gets +2 mil and a player loses 1 honor).

No. Banzai can be cancelled by Floor Rules.

I'm not finding "Floor Rules" in the card list for the Core Set. Is it going to be in the Dynasty Pack?

Also, I'm confused why you would disagree with an official ruling. Are you a tournament judge?

There are no official Floor Rules yet.

So, there is a homebrew card named Floor Rules with cancellation effects? I mean no one could be so mistaken as to think tournament floor rules would cancel a played card could they?

Thanks for posting this.

had seen this played 3 different ways. (2 different manners I’d seen online, and a separate way live during the first release at the Con)

Hopefully a rules compilation gets released by FFG, as it is needed given how this card and other similar ones can be read.

I'm literally working on the unofficial compilation today. (All I'm doing is taking rulings/sources from fiveringsdb and putting in one file)
This document should be useful until FFG release something themselves.
