Best Massive Unit

By Smooches, in Imperial Assault Campaign

Hello. I'm playing as the empire for the first time and want to bring a massive unit into the fray.

I know that high threat single units usually aren't as good but it seems like a lot of fun, so I'm doing it.

I'm interested to know which massive units people think are the best. Which monster gives the most bang for its threat.

PS I'm running Inspiring Leadership with field general and lead by example so I think the massive units are a little more viable with this build.

It's hard to say any unit is "best", since the situation can drastically affect that, but here are some thoughts-

-I usually really like the Bantha a lot. It's big, comparatively cheap, can deal damage in two ways, and has a ton of health. Even though it has no defense die, that's not necessarily a bad thing if you want your Rebels to waste actions attacking it. Basically, think of the Bantha as a roadblock, not an attacker.

- Unless you're running a vehicle heavy deck or have an Agenda card like Armored Division that can lower the threat cost, I've never really found the AT-ST or Weiss to be worth it. Awkward, as well as the inability to attack twice, are pretty crippling for it.

- The rancor is fun, but I think it's not much of a match for late-campaign heroes. Personally, I've found it's most effective mid=campaign, when you're feasibly able to drop 10 threat on it but the heroes aren't all that powerful yet.

- People tend to hate the tank. For 10 threat, I think it's decent. It's good that it has Assault. However...

-The new AT-DP coming out outclasses the tank pretty handily. In fact, if we had to choose a "best", that might be it.

The AT-DP looks awesome! I'm excited to give that one a try.

Thanks for the break down. Seems like a great analysis.

We ended up adding a 4th hero to our campaign right before Canyon Run where I was planning to drop something massive, so their suddenly much bigger amount of single target damage made it seem like a real bad idea and I didn't do it :D

Starting Jabba's now and will certainly drop a rancor around mid-game. Thanks for the idea!

Ooh, I didn't know you were doing Canyon Run! The Bantha is pretty popular for that one- both strategically and thematically.

Have fun with the Rancor! :D

I couldn't bring myself to drop my Bantha in Canyon Run, as I felt the Heroes would simply not be able to deal with it and leave enough time to have a reasonable chance at winning the mission.

That said, if your Rebels are very good or are playing a particularly strong combination of heroes, then go for it. Watch the dread in their eyes as the Bantha blocks their path!
