L5r interest

By Bradders77, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hi chaps, im currently playing SW Destiny. Is L5r proving costly in comparison to SWD?

How does it work regarding acquiring the cards. Do we all buy the starter game, then choose a clan then buy the set for our chosen clan each time they are introduced? Is it designed like other games, you have to buy other clan sets to get the cards I'd like for my clan?

Cheers

I strongly expect that at some point there will be cards you'll want in other clans packs.

One core gets you a barebones deck, two cores you can build a full legal deck, three cores you have a full playset of all cards. Dynasty packs of additional cards priced at $15 (per FFG store pricing) are expected to release roughly monthly. Each pack will include full playsets of 20 new cards spread out amongst the clans, as well as some neutrals...exact distribution of cards isn't verified yet, but should be at least a couple per clan. Then there are anticipated to be larger deluxe boxes released possibly 2x a year, I think most are looking to the previous boxes for AGOT 2.0 for what to expect for those, but no confirmed details on what those will look like for L5R.

This is thing. If it is a case of buy x2-3 cores, pick a clan then buy the expansion for your chosen clan as and when they come out, this would be great, but if you have to buy all the other clan expansions to get the cards for my chosen clan, it just makes it so hard to keep up with and afford.

If you're a completionist, you'll need every pack to have copies of every card for your clan. But, you may not want the cards in a particular pack. Or you may be able to split a pack with someone who plays a different clan than you.

So how will they put the cards out.... produce a unicorn pack with a few bits then have upgrades for other clans to try and get you to buy the other clan packs? X7 clan packs per month =105 per month It just seems expensive.... If you want everything of course. If the monthly packs are balanced I suppose it's not so bad.

Oh no, nothing so crazy as that. It's generally a single pack each month split between all the clans. With what has been revealed so far, there's 60 cards total with (most likely) 3 copies each of 20 cards. Those 20 cards include something for each clan, and neutral cards that any clan can use. Your total monthly investment to buy every pack released would be $15, assuming there's a must have for you in every dynasty pack. Only time you'll need to buy more than that is when a deluxe box is released, which my understanding is similar in size to a core box, although the deluxe boxes should have full playsets (unlike the core boxes).

The 'dynasty' packs are $15 expansion packs that have a few cards for each clan, and come out once a month. So if you want all the cards, it's only $15 every month, not $15x7 every month, because there's only one dynasty pack, not seven clan packs. The first dynasty pack, I believe somewhere said it would have a card or two for each clan, and a small handful of neutral cards.

So to have absolutely everything, you're looking at $120 up front, and $15 per month (or $180 a year).

Hmm this seems a pretty good, can't complain at 15 notes a month if its balanced. I'm liking the sound of it. I'll probably pick up a core set and see what it's like and go from there. Unless my mate wants to stick with destiny. Cheers mate

LCGs are always more cost effective than CCGs. And the best time to get into them is when they start.

Older games, like Star Wars and Game of Thrones, are a bit trickier for new players because there tends to be a lot of product they need to pick up to be Tier 1 competitive. Now, you can tell them they don't have to be, but the fact of the matter is everyone playing is playing that kind of deck, even casually.

And FFG is either unable or unwilling to figure out a way to make it more financially feasible for new players to get into a mature LCG.

Personally, I'd love to see entire cycles collected and sold at a steep discount at some point after the cycles' original completion. That way retailers aren't boned, existing players don't feel ripped off, and new players aren't so overwhelmed.

But I guess I'm getting a tad off topic...
