Confirmation on a few questions and status?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

So much like most of you I play at many different stores.

My 2 home stores are run by the same TO. He has many house rules and recently I went to play in another store where they used the basic rules, Now with so many different rules I need confirmation, so I know which is used by what stores. Let's just start with a few:

1) All measurements are Cardboard to Cardboard, not base to base - I'm pretty sure this is a house rule

2) Kylo Ren and boba Fett: only activate when the crit you deal is not blocked by defense dice - pretty sure this is a house rule, but not sure

3) Accuracy Corrector and Autoblaster Turret: When you cancel your results and add two hits, these two hits can be stopped by evade tokens and results - Not sure about this one anywhere have seen it played both ways, but I thought you just couldn't cancel them

4) Minefield Mapper: Some people say you can put down all mines or bombs while others say you can put down just ones on your card, not the Extra Munitions tokens. Does anyone know?

5) Ghost and Shuttle: when you undock a shuttle from a ghost without the ghost being destroyed, the shuttle can still fire and take actions if it hasn't bumped. - I was sure you could shoot, but many say you cannot.

thanks for helping me understand these rules and status.

Eagletsi

1: house rule. Note that the nubs don't count for measuring range, though.

2: Correct for Kylo. Boba also needs to actually deal a card, so if the crit is uncancelled but it hits a shield, he doesn't work.

3: wrong. They're hit results, just as if you'd rolled them.

4: not yet clear needs FAQ. Probably you only get to trigger it once for each card, using up the EM but leaving the card in play, but the FAQ could go either way.

5: Correct. Your action and shot are only blocked if you deploy due to damage.

I also have one:

When counting points for a list with ships A (34pt), B (33pt) and C (32pt), where A+B are destroyed, then the opponent gets 67pt, NOT 68, right?

I was going through vassal results and it looks like at least one game entered it wrong, adding the bid to the destroyed instead of remaining ship.

What @thespaceinvader said, but here's a couple comments:

1) yes, it's plastic to plastic (but not the nubs). However, in Armada, it's cardboard to cardboard, so maybe that's where that ruling originated.

2)

3) back when autoblaster was first released, evade tokens could cancel the results. But then they released an FAQ change that said that evade tokens add the evade dice result, and it specifically says that they cannot be used to block autoblaster hits or Ten Numb crits. That change was made years ago but it's surprising how many people still don't understand that though.

4) Everyone is still waiting for FAQ clarification on that. Probably a good idea to get the TO's ruling on it before attending any official event.

Correct, you only get points destroyed unless you kill the whole list (in which case you get 100). If you have a bid, those points are locked in for you unless you get your whole list wiped out.

Thanks guys. This helps. There are starting to be so many house rules at my local stores, that I'm getting confused as to which is real and which is not.

This is why house rules outside of anything but the friendliest of games is generally a poor idea. If you use them too much they become too ingrained in your mind especially when it has to do with rulings where one could see things going either way.

Or more clearly mark the rules used within the store as being house rules. It should be in writing for anything non-standard so players know what they are getting into before deciding to show.

This is why house rules should be kept for just that, casual games at home. How is a new player supposed to learn if all these rules, not intended for play by FFG, are thrown at them?

I should have read all the comments before commenting..seems I have just doubled up on what others have said.

Ask them to play" x wing".

Not...

..." X wing this guy made up."

I found out tonight why the cardboard to cardboard rule originally came about. Evidently a player had a large base that was either oversized or the cardboard was undersized. This allowed the cardboard to both shift and rotate a little. The player would use this "slop" to adjust his firing arc.

The simplest thing to do would be to replace the base not change the rules.

This problem is this guy is the only one who TO's. And at first it was one store, but now it's two. I went to my store in another location and argued with a guy on how Kylo works, because of some much confusion.

I have 5 other players who won't come out to his tournaments after having the rules sprung on them when they arrived at the store. Does FFG have some type of rules committee that will help correct this guy?

Unfortunately not so much at the kit tournament level. The players themselves have to vote him out either through the store owner or by not showing up. It's a bit rough.

which is why we have lost 5 players and really most nights are dead. He has ruined the scene. It started with the bases and with no push back, it has just gotten worse. Frankly. I have a tough time going to the stores myself. I mean the game is fun, but when you

build a list which works at every other store and show up to play and they tell you it doesn't work at this store. Now wonder much of our players have just stopped coming to game night. Most of them are driving an hour to play rather then 10 minutes because of it. I'm thinking about driving the hour myself.

There are event feedback forms that can be filled out too - and FFG will respond to the store in question if they consider it a problem.

Which they occasionally do when it is directly affecting their brand or profits.

Got a link? Obviously @eagletsi111 has a problem that fits this description. From the perspective of a small store TO I'd like to know that the players do in fact have a chain they can discuss problems with.

  1. The TO in question
  2. Store owners if that doesn't work
  3. FFG if that fails

To Report or provide event feedback to FFG directly, as a Player:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/op/feedback/

Also, it should be noted that the Suspension policy does not apply only to players - all participants, Judges, Marshals, etc, are all bound by it - and if you compromise the integrity of an event without due cause, you can be subject to it. (Of course, in some cases, that can be very difficult to 'prove'...)

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/op/spolicy/

AND IF YOU ARE THE TO ITSELF , there is a whole separate section for event reporting:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/op/report/

thing is I don't want this guy to get suspended, but someone beside all of the players who has some power needs to talk to them. The problem our players are too nice and rather than start conflict, just let it go. If FFG doesn't step in soon, X-wing in two stores will be dead.

Be the change you want to see in your local community. Volunteer to TO the next event. Print the rules and FAQ out to have on hand.

This sounds horrible and I hope it gets sorted out.

Start with feedback.

if the alternative is your game dead in 2 stores, then you know, does it matter the cost in the end?

Especially when, really, it shouldn’t get that far unless it is actually deserved.

It's hardly suspension. For starters, many small tournament TOs are not officially representing FFG. We're volunteers from the gaming pool. FFG would have to talk to the store directly to have somebody sit down with your TO. This is why I was surprised by @Drasnighta providing the info on the feedback page. It's worth doing. I would recommend a talk with the stores first if you haven't already...

Guys, there is a rules questions section in this forum.

True, This is not about rules, per say. But how to get a TO to conform to Standard Rules.

The complicated fix: if it doesn't already exist, have someone fire up a Facebook group for TO dudes to chit chat with each other. They should sort of self regulate this guy.

The easy fix: show him this thread.

My favorite fix: let's get everyone to go to his tournament. And when these house rules come up we can all say....er....NOPE.

This group exists. It's a mess too, lol.
