Newish player needs tips for Hastur deck building

By zigx, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

Hey everyone. So two friends and I recently got the Core Set and we absolutely love the game. We're getting some Asylum Packs now, but I wanted some help from the more experienced in deck building tips. I know I definitely want to use Hastur as I really like the lore behind that faction and I am leaning heavily towards Cthulhu as my secondary faction. With these in mind can anyone help me out as to what cards I should be on the lookout for? And also general strategies while playing a Hastur/Cthulhu deck? I know my friend is going to be playing Agency/Miskatonic, so any cards that specifically help against those factions? Any help would be great, thanks!! :D

I'll approach the answer backwards since you know what you'll be playing against.

Miskatonic features a lot of card drawing, investigation, and deck/hand annoyance (forcing discards, viewing hands, viewing decks and manipulating it, etc). Miskatonic has a weakness to both terror and combat. Agency features a decent amount of removal (shotguns, pistols, dynamite, small price to pay, etc) paired with characters with a lot of combat. Also, a lot of the agency cards have willpower.

Sooo with that in mind, what you're looking for in your deck building of Hastur + Cthulhu is terror and combat. Hastur is pretty weak on combat, so you'll need your skulls from Cthulhu. Both Hastur and Cthulhu have a lot of terror at their disposal. If your opponent builds a strong deck from Miskatonic and Agency, what you'll likely run into is a lot of investigators that can rush you quickly. On top of that many of them will have willpower, which your terror icons can't get rid of. To deal with these, you're going to need cards like Deep One Assault that can directly remove them. Also, if you can get a few copies of Bringer of Fire into play, that'll help with removing some of those annoying high combat + willpower cards.

Here is a video of a Cthulhu/Hastur deck playing against an Agency/Syndicate deck, if you wanted to get an idea of how it plays. Also, there is a deck list in the description.

Thanks for the tips! Now just have to wait around for the Asylum Packs to get to my house. >_>
