Release Kit Ripoff

I got one of the Favors, too! I picked up my third Core at a local store that wasn't running any events, but had gotten one of the release kits. They handed out stuff with every Core purchase.

My local tried to run, but I was the only to show up, so I got a fullbleed Altansarnai to go with my full bleed Toturi. I'm talking to them about setting up an L5R night.

Fortunately, the store I mentioned wasn't my normal store. My normal store had 20+ people at the first release event, and we have high hopes some of them will start showing up at our Tuesday night games, and we may even be able to get a league going again!

The first store I went to had 10 people show, I'm keeping an eye on their facebook feed for more events, but I'd love to get a gaming group set up at my normal store.

Look at all you guys with your local game stores :(

I was able to go to two release events. The first was an hour away and smaller, but the store owner was super cool. Everyone got two full bleeds, an Imperial Favor, pin, lanyard, and stickers.

My local store played it by the book and we had more people than lanyards, so some of the people and I who went to the previous event handed the new ones we got for this event over.

I have three Bayushi Shojus.

I'm sorry, man. That stinks.

And here in Europe, stores have received official mail stating that not respecting the official model of prizing distribution will be punished (no future kits)... >.>

Yeah, I know that's official policy. I doubt it's enforced given my experience mirrors the experience of many others at many different events.

To say nothing of the many, many stores that order kits just to turn around and sell them on eBay.

That also assumes the stores read the rules. I know of at least one store that wasn't giving out any full bleeds until the players showed them the event description.

There's what FFG says, and there's what FFG does. When FFG starts cracking down on stores that sell their kits on eBay I'll start to worry about customer-friendly stores that give out too much product in events.

That kinda sucks... because some stores aren't breaking the rules. The store I go to followed them, so I have friends who traveled to other stores who have tons of the promos, but I have to wait and play through it properly. Kinda sucks, but if I really wanted the promos I could just buy them. Prolly save money that way vs all the gas and time off from work lol

I think it can balance out. In my case, my local store had more attendees than prizes, so those of us who went to the generous store either handed over what extras we got, or declined to take more.

I feel worse for people who went to events that drew significantly more than 12, because they weren't even getting stickers! But begrudging a store who gave out more than they were supposed to? (And the only way they did that is if they had fewer attendees than the kit was designed for -- meaning the game maybe isn't that popular in the area and the store is trying to encourage people to return.)

How does that harm you in the least?

But maybe I'm reading in more anger than there is; tone is sometimes hard to tell. If I am, my apologies in advance.

@selderane I didn't say it hurt me, I said it sucks. I have just 1 promo card which was drawn randomly. I was extremely fortunate to get Bayushi Shoju by pure luck, but there were attendees who received no promo cards at all. Because the store followed the rules they gave out 1 of each champion completely randomly, and the lanyards and stickers. Meanwhile one of my friends berated them for only giving out that, showing off that they had another champion promo, the Imperial Favor, and the pin. It sucks, but it doesn't hurt me. As I said I could buy these if I really wanted and it would probably cost me less than if I had taken more time off from work, and spent the gas to travel. It just sucks to see some getting things they weren't supposed to because some smaller store just gave it all out.

Now you can say some smaller store might try to encourage people to return by dumping all the promos on who showed up - but since they have no prizes left... I don't know if anyone will return there lol

@shosuko Well, I can't speak for the stores that gave away all their prizes. That seems unwise any way you slice it.

But the store I'm talking about still has plenty enough to make me go next month.

Honestly, I need to rethink playing Scorpion as my primary because it seems there are too many local players who want to play them, and at least one player who adamantly refuses to play any other clan.

I'm mulling over refusing to play him simply because that attitude makes for a crappy play environment.

So I'll need Unicorn and Phoenix promos now.

About buying promos online, I do it all of the time. And with Clan Champion full bleeds being handed out at every tournament for the foreseeable future, they'll become more plentiful and less expensive than they are now.

I plan on being patient. I don't need playsets of full-bleed promos, nor do I need every champion lol. I wouldn't mind a full set of Shoju, or a full set... but it isn't enough to make me drop money yet.

Scorpion certainly seems popular with the new game. I'm always a Scorpion player, but I don't mind other people playing Scorpion. Maybe doing Crab + Scorpion would help so you can still dishonor fools, but you can also wall up against Scorpion pretty well. Crane + Unicorn is fun too.

I just like coming to the table with options, and playing people who present me options.

Knowing that "Steve" only plays X is incredibly boring to me. I'm sure he has a blasty-blast but, being Scorpion primary, the mirror match is a chore.

If I have to do the mirror match I'd rather it be against someone who is also willing to play other Clans.

Variety is the spice of life, and all that.

I agree with options being good, and it can be frustrating when someone is very inflexible and insists on playing the exact same thing weekly.

As a tangent to that, I've heard some people talk about how clan loyalty will be almost non-existent when everyone has copies of all clans, but I think your posts highlight why this isn't necessarily the case. You're a primary Scorpion player, and yet you enjoy playing options. People having multiple decks doesn't mean there won't be one clan they feel more akin to than the others, and which they'll want to represent in organized play.

Even back in the CCG, I had decks for all nine of the Ivory/20F clans, and yet I always considered myself a Mantis player and went with Mantis in the few tournaments I played.

@JJ48 I couldn't agree more. And I played pretty much mono-Clan in the CCG so I could trade away cards I needed for my Scorpion deck. It was a cost-savings measure, because the only reason I got into the game in the first place was that I knew I could with relatively minor monetary investment.

That's why I moved on to LCGs after I stopped playing L5R.

And if you have three cores, there's no reason not to at least play a second Clan.

With three core sets, you can perfectly build two decks. Unless you want the same splash in both, you're fine, and I personally see no reason why you wouldn't always have two decks ready.

So the release kit costs the retailer almost as much as 2 core boxes. It has a few cents worth of cards, a few cents worth of lanyards and a few cents worth of pins.

No one uses or wants lanyards.

No one wears or wants pins.

It's a giant box of garbage.

If you're a retailer hoping the release kit will help you push product, just buy two core sets and throw them out on the sidewalk in front of your store, it will do a better job than tossing a bunch of lanyards and pins in the landfill.

I guess Fantasy Flight has no faith in this product and are just grabbing profit from retailers because that is all this is, a cash grab that will do nothing to help push the game.

Don't know about you but my Full bleed Hida Kisada's look amazing in my deck.

I don't think that people that only play one deck to master it/be a clan loyalist to be boring. On the contrary, I think that the understanding of the group will improve.

I usually have only 1 deck built (even when building 2 decks is as perfectly possible as in L5R). I might build a second deck, but I might not bother.

One of our local stores got in 3 release kits for...well no one really knows why they bought 3. 12 people showed for the release event, so everyone got a full bleed. The other store botched the their launch event and gave away the Favors instead of the full bleeds. Unfortunately for our area the stores didn't know about the release until the week of and didn't know where the Launch event information was, so both store messed up. I have since emailed them both the launch event information.

What understanding?

If you're looking to understand Clans and decks better, play different Clans and different decks. I think being Clan loyal works well for this guy precisely because everyone else is happy to play other Clans.

But what if everyone else was just like him and Scorpion loyal too? An entire playgroup that only runs one Clan? How's that fun?

Now you can say that wouldn't happen, and you're right, but that's not my point. He has the freedom to be inflexible because everyone else is very flexible.

So, as I said, I won't play him. I'm Scorpion loyal, I know what the mirror match looks like, and I find that player's mindset myopic and selfish.

not quite sure how clan loyalty is 'selfish' , the only signal I am seeing is how you are getting arsey with someone for not playing the way you want.

I don't have any problems with anyone deciding they don't want to play certain matchups but don't try and dress it up in phony righteousness and slur the player you don't want to play with....

No need to play a mirror match, after all...

"... if you have three cores, there's no reason not to at least play a second Clan."

So you could always just play your other deck, spice of life and all that. Unless you're really just a black pot in disguise.

Encouraging the playgroup to play everything so they know all the options from all sides? Selfishness!

I'll play this player in a heartbeat if he'd be as considerate as everyone else. We have plenty of Scorpion decks and players. We're not for want of that.

And I have no problem with the mirror match and will happily play it with someone who wants the practice. But I'm disinterested in accommodating someone who isn't willing to return the favor.

That dude can play whatever way he wants. It's a card game and he's free to pursue fun in his own way. I simply find the behavior selfish and I opt not to facilitate it.

But you do you, bro.

its true I like facilitating players enjoying playing whatever clan they want. If I had an issue with that then I would be the one with the problem.

but I am sure your gaming group loves having someone as selfrighteous as your good self to ensure they play what you require.
