What size will the new A-Wing be?

By melminiatures, in X-Wing

I know this is a tired subject, but thanks to The Last Jedi there is even more proof that the A-Wing looks weird as big as it is.

Here is a comparison between the official size of the Resistance A-Wing seen in The Last Jedi and the official size of the A-Wing that FFG uses:

As you can see it looks... odd. Maybe the new A-Wing is MUCH smaller. But it seems weird that every single part (engines, cannons, cockpit) would have changed with the exact same proportion. Here is a pic of a pilot in the cockpit:

So I believe the A-Wing should have been something more like this:

Understandably, that is a ridiculous size for a miniature. People would not have been happy with a 2.4cm miniature. So I get why considering the inconsistencies of the A-Wing size in Return of the Jedi (between miniatures, cockpit shot and matte paintings) they decided to go with the largest size to make the best miniature.

The problem now is that the new A-Wing is officially 7.7m in every way possible. There is no way to go around that size... so my question is, when FFG releases the Resistance A-Wing, will they keep the offical size making it very small and very different from the current A-Wing or will they adapt the size to fit the A-Wing miniature so the game keeps looking good?

Or they will just release the old A-Wing model with a new paintjob new resistance pilots and a new title.

Let's hope they don't do that :D

No way! They couldn't possibly omit Disney's creative input into the franchise. It's got a LONGER FRONT!!! So revolutionary! I mean, in case of TIE Fighters they just gave them a new paintjob. Stormtroopers got a slightly different helmet... but A-wing - it's shape ACTUALLY changed - if only slightly. This can only be compared to AT-AT walkers getting a slightly bulldoggy look. I can't believe how daring Disney is. It's only been 30 years and they're changing so much!

The real question is whether it will be too long to fit in a blister.

And if it, too, will come with a 4-bank..

Large base confirmed?

TIE/fo shape is different to the original TIE Fighter. It's at least as much of a change as the new A-Wing.

Oh yeah, I totally noticed that.

No I didn't.

but will it have pivoting lasers!!

There are so many varying scales in X-wing. It won't really matter.

I do think the new RZ-2 looks larger though, so I'd say this new info may actually put the old 'A-wing true scale' into question.

Not the kind of pivot most people are thinking about.

Indeed. They move 120 degrees within the forward arc, which is already abstracted.. so. No mechanic for it.

As to the small size of the new a-wing, I really don't mind it. Rebels has shown the larger a-wing. The Last Jedi is showing this newer, smaller, and updated version.

My hope is that with the smaller size, the powers that be will give us two in a slightly larger blister. The size the punisher or k-wing come in could work.

Why?

The original RZ-1 had pivoting lasers as well, the same 120 degrees. Some variants existed that pivoted to face the rear as well. All from WEG lore.

Actually more of a change. Small wings, hollow spaces in the struts, antenna mounted starboard side of cockpit, and vertical orientation of engines instead of horizontal. And totally different guns.

But them I’m a TIE snob and notice the smallest details.

Now I want the TIE Snob in the game...

Maybe even Epic.

Or perhaps they will use this opportunity to release a new pair of A-wings together in a blister. The new A, and the Rotj Awing, and officially retcon the other AWings as the model seen in Rebels which is definitely larger than the one in RotJ. This gives us the good old Awing Spearhead is a solid stock fighter which gets modified by rebel tech to be faster, lighter and more refined into the top of the line Awing interceptor, and then years later a new variant is released.

Wow this again? I think I need a different game.

It'll most likely be roughly the same size. Maybe a little longer.

I just hope we actually get the A-Wing!

That sounds like a Tie/ SF not so much a tie/ FO. but the Tie/ FOs are different from the Imperial tie fighters.

TIE/sf is radically different, it has much larger antenna, those gear things in the struts, beefier struts, totally different fear cockpit and engines, the ventral Turret.

The /fo is still markedly different from an /ln, as I pointed out but when compared to the SF the two ‘standard’ Fighters are much closer to each other.

We'll all try to soldier on without you.

I honestly hope that they, in diligently paying homage to all aspects of the original trilogy, use a different scale on screen than they do in their new canon source books, but use a different onscreen scale than they originally did, such that the A-Wing scale debate rages on until the end of time.
