What does a 3rd Core Set give you?

By KrisWall, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Quick background...

My buddy gifted me his Lord of the Rings LCG collection. The collection included two cores. LOTR LCG is a game where a full playset requires three core sets. I went out immediately and bought a third core. HOWEVER, the overwhelming majority of player cards have either two or three in each core set. What that means is that while you need three cores for a full playset, the third core is really only contributing about 16 cards or so (I don't remember the exact number). I kind of feel like getting that third core was a waste of money.

For those who are in the know, how does this work with L5R? How many actual cards do you need from that third core box? Is this another situation where two cores covers MOST of a playset and the third core just fills in certain cards? I have two cores on hold for purchase tonight and am debating getting a third.

Each core only contains one copy of the vast majority of Clan cards, and 2 of most Neutral cards

So, for L5R, you actually get at least 85 useful cards from a third core set.

Also, due to being able to 'splash' conflict cards of a second clan into a deck, some people / small playgroups have grabbed 4 or 5 core sets.

Ok... that makes sense. I think I was mislead by the fact that the suggested starter decks had so many 2 of this card and 3 of that card. Now that I look back, I see that those are all neutrals and the starters only have 1 each of the clan cards. I think I'm going to stick with 2 cores for now and see how the game plays.

Hopefully you love how the game plays half as much as I do

The third core set adds 167 cards to a playset of 674 cards. So it is 25% of a full playset being in the third core.

One copy of cards 25-121 (97 Dynasty cards)

One copy of cards 130-199 (70 Conflict cards)

That's a pretty good amount, even divided among all the clans. LOTR only provided something like 4-5 cards per 'faction' in the 3rd core.

Yeah it was like that for Netrunner too. The third Netrunner core gets you whopping 7 cards. One per faction........I think they got it right with L5R.

To just add a bit more. 3 cores will give you 1 playset of all clan cards, 2 playsets of all neutral cards, and 3 playsets of the following cards (Seppun Guard, Miya Mystic, Otomo Courtier, Wandering Ronin, all provinces, roles, and strongholds).

All those Wandering Ronin...that I will probably never use.

Legends say that he's still wandering the land... Hoping to find someone willing to use his skills.
