Which PC gets the loot?

By Darth Poopdeck, in Game Masters

The group just defeated a NPC and they all want his hat. How do you decide who gets it, or any loot ever with a group. You can't ever divide things up evenly every time.

What solution seems to work for you?

Let the players/characters handle it. I've never had the PCs figuring things out on their own result in any meaningful detraction from the game. Players are usually pretty reasonable about how things get split up.

My group usually throws it in a bag and dispenses it out later. If the arguments about loot are in character I usually let it play out, but if people are just debating OoC, I quickly lose patience and tell them to discuss it between sessions.

It's no secret that looting corpses is my least favorite RPG tradition, and it makes me more irritated when it brings the game to a halt.

Is there any mechanical benefit to said hat, or is this every bit as childish and awesome as I think it is? Either way, I suggest they decide who gets to keep the hat with a game of hot grenade - turn on a stun grenade, and start juggling it back and forth between players until someone gets knocked unconscious, and repeat until only one player remains conscious. In the case of a tie, the first person to wake up gets the hat.

Well you must be a lot of fun at funerals...

Unless the deceased dropped some epic loot. Then my morals are thrown out the window.

Uh. It's a hat. It costs like what 25 credits? Have a tag on the inside that says "Space Bob's Hat Emporium". Travel to said hat Emporium, now everyone has hats.

Clearly the problem here is that your description of said hat was too awesome, obviously you need to tone it down. :P

Let the players work it out. If they cant work it out and it makes a problem, split the item up and give a slice to each player. There is a very long tradition of that one.

If it's good enough for King Solomon, it's good enough for some GM playing pretend with his bros.

And now all I can think of is Sword Art Online Abridged by Something Witty, and that one guys hat with all the charisma boosts.

He'd say something stupid, people would start to refuse, he'd put the hat on, and now because his CHA is higher, they would agree. It must be a hat like that to have this much loot mongering.

Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the looter?

I thought not, it's not a story these forums would tell you. It's a roleplaying legend. Darth Plagueis was a PC. He had such a knowledge of the rules that he could loot the bodies to acquire... anything.

He became so wealthy, the only thing he became afraid of was... losing his loot. Which eventually he did. Unfortunately he taught another PC everything he knew. Then that PC killed and looted him in his sleep. Ironic, isn't it? He could loot others, but not himself.

I can’t say I blame them. My character in one group I play in recently swiped Hondo Ohnaka’s hat. My GM grants me a boost on Charm checks when wearing it. :D

Wow, Neimoidian PCs are more common than I thought.

Let the players work it out. Out-of-character negotiation is part of the fun of role-playing.

No, suggest cutting the hat in pieces and whoever first objects gets to keep it!

Mercy is for the cowardly and the weak! I drive me enemies before me and take what I like....errr  ....whoops....wrong genre........

Typical solution is insure there's something everyone will likely be interested in, and then if they argue you're entitled to play some music them....

I don't mind it if it's an item that they want and actually use . For example, I had one player who really liked light-whips; so when the PC's killed a person who was armed with a light-whip, I had no problem with her keeping it.

What I don't like is when they get down to the point of rolling dead stormtroopers for loose change. That's when I put on my Disapproving GM face, hold up a core book, and ask them if it says "Dungeons and Dragons" (or "Pathfinder") on it.

Must be one **** of a hat... I've never had a pc fight over anything worth less than 500 credits.

Yeah now I need to know what kind of Hat this is.

I get why they like looting, but it's way too video game to me. I used to hand out all loot at the end of the game in D&D because I got tired of Christmas morning breaking into the game and stopping it.

You thought it was a hat? IT'S A MIND CONTROL DEVICE FROM A LONG LOST SITH LORD, NOW ALL YOUR LOT R BELONG TO US. XD

This system isn't really a system of crunching numbers, the prospect of looting very rarely comes up unless it's a) an exceptionally interesting item (holocron, information) b) an high powered item (because items are gained and lost all the time) or C) because someone really likes fancy hats. We once had to talk a member down from wearing a inquistor Ewok's severed head. Good times.

It was a player desire accoutrement ruse device. Well done GM, you have them now!

Looting can make for some fun situations. Like when Kashra wanted to loot a DHX, but Tssokass got it instead. Kashra wanted a DHX so bad that she bought one, while Tssokass ended up selling his.

And here I thought it was a Topper Relevant to All Players.

That’s right.

It’s a....

This post is my favorite post on these boards. You get a blue star!

Wait - there's loot in this game?
