Artwork Sharpness

By XTrueFinale, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I understand that art is very subjective.

I'm wondering whether it's just me or does the artwork seem somewhat gentle and faded, it may be intentional as part of the design. Personally I kinda wished the artwork was sharper or crisper, wondering is that just me?

Example of sharper art are for example cards in Force of Will (I haven't played the game only noticed the very sharp vibrant art style)

It's just a completely different art style. Force of Will tends to have more of a comic book/manga/line art style. L5R doesn't seem to be going that route. I'm sure that was a 100% intentional decision by the design staff.

I am pleased they are not (apparently) following the manga art style of force of will.

the game appears gorgeous and , Imo, better than the ccg.

other peoples opinions will differ of course

It is an intentional part of the design. At the Design Team panel at GenCon, Katrina Ostrander said as much. They're trying to call back to traditional historic Japanese art like sumi-e and the like that were more suggestive/subjective and not as objective or defined.

To me, Force of Will has an ugly, garish, too-busy look to most of its cards, in both template design and art.

L5R lcg has a lovely, clean template design, and most of the artwork ranges from solid to excellent.

Nearly half of art from Core Set come from CCG.

indeed but the card layout didn't and neither did the card backs all combine to make the game more visually appealing..

Intentional.

Reminiscent of Japanese watercolor.
