L5R RPG Beta is up for download
So it's RnK and custom dice. Everyone is happy!
Not Genesys. Ever-so-mildly surprised. More than a little disappointed.

Or no one is happy.
Minor Clans confirmed to exist. I am happy already.
I think I'm just going to tweet my responses to the game as I read them.
Hope you guys enjoy the adventure!

QuoteMost Minor Clans are roughly equal in power to one of the individual
families of the Great Clans, though some—such as the Mantis—are
powerful enough to command greater respect.
I am thrilled that our random musings of 'use different rings for the same skill' turned out right.
I.... wow.
I see the intent, and the desire to make something that pleases everyone... but oh my, it does feel terribly messy.
Okay, liking what I'm seeing thus far. Overview article paints a good mix of old and new. We'll see if a hybrid system works. Could be the best of both worlds or be a confused mish-mash. Though already loving the focus on the internal and having emotions be an active aspect of the mechanics that makes players think. Very risk vs. reward setup with a narrative flair.
A tentative optimism blooms.
I'm pretty excited. I'm very glad it's not full on Genesys. They are honoring the past of the game but bringing some new elements to it. But I'm only on page 6 after skimming through some other things...So we'll see how it all pans out!
Boss, I'm suddenly sick and have to go home. Cough. Cough.
I am so hyped. I'll be all day devouring this.

The magical venue of text. Never quite sure if it's sarcasm is occurring.
No D10s.
Sadly, I'm not surprised, but still managed to be disappointed.
Basically, this will be D&D 4th Ed. all over again.
Ironically, I'll go back to my L5R 4th Ed.
So, please confirm for me. This needs a set of custom dice incompatible with Genesys/SW.

That is the case, yes.

Literally 10 minutes before I had to work. Come on, FFG should know my schedule by now!
Correct me I'm reading this wrong, but if you want to be really good at your job, you need to invest heavily in -all- rings..? (page 80 onwards)

No, if you want to be good at all approaches to your job, you do.
If you are never going to use a skill in a graceful, perceptive, cunning, or precise manner? You can make Air your dumpstat.
THAT SAID
XP costs currently encourage you to start with one ULTRA RING, instead of a balanced build.

I was actually thinking on the case of crafting skills. It kinda sucks for them, because if you're a crafter of X, you're kind of expected to know how to repair, adapt, and at least improve that X. Invent and attune are in the "Master" league, so to speak, but still... that's 3 of 5 rings you need to invest just to be able to do your job.
And with Rings being used for multiple skills (instead of 2 Traits per Ring), it kinda turns into "Oh, I just buy a little skill in Y, and now I'm rolling like a boss in it"
Not quite sure how I feel about it :/

Yet. I would try to rebuild the characters from my 4th ed group except there is no Mirumoto Bushi or Soshi shugenja in the beta. All things in time.
