X-wing annual magazine. What would you want to include?

By TylerTT, in X-Wing

Would you want to see an annual magazine from FFG that focused on and provided content for X-Wing?

what sort of content do you want from a magazine like this?

After seeing the Privater Press No Quarter Prime announcement I got jellies and wanted something similar for FFG's Star Wars miniature games.

i feel the game needs some kind of product and development support that is not yet another ship in a blister and I feel an anual magazine would be a great move.

Magazines can include packins like cards and punchboard but don't require much packaging outside of shrink wrap and a shipping container.

  • Centrefold of a TIE Fighter
  • scenarios
  • unique pilots would be cool
  • strategy tips

Errata'd cards with proper text.

A combination of these two please.

Maybe a campaign map on the reverse side of the tie fighter centerfold.

Dang it, I know already commented on this, but it got me thinking on the old Star Wars gamer magazine. I had some issues of it growing up and they had tons of stuff for the d20 Star Wars RPG at the time. They'd have mini-campaigns, stats for NPCs, new gear, new prestige classes, and on and on. If they could make something like that for X-Wing, I would be glued to the mail box each month for my issue.

What we don't need is a Letters to the Editor column. I can imagine what that would look like. . .

Interview with that year's Worlds' champion (as well possibly the winners of Nationals and other premier tournaments) including strategy articles from the same- something more specific than the generic sorts of strategy articles that FFG sometimes posts, like an in depth explanation of the *list they won with, why they chose that list, how to fly it, and how to beat it.

(*note: I don't care one whit about trying to copy someone else's winning list, but it would be fascinating to see their thought processes behind building and flying it)

New missions that are actually balanced.

Now you're talking crazy talk.

Actually it might be a good idea. This would allow for some curated comments and considered FFG responses. I don’t think I’ve ever seen FFG make a response anywhere on these forums (or perhaps they’re not tagged as FFG staff).

Look at the front page topics. Congrats, there's your letter to the editor section. nerf this, errata that, blah blah blah.

Curated question and answer would be great! The front page of a forum is just a bunch of negative garbage because poop floats. But curated careful communication is very helpful.

Sir! How frivolous! Have you no morals?!? There'd be children reading these magazines!

I picked up similar magazines back in WEG era of the D6 magazines. Still got'em with my RPG stuff too. Very handy resource.

X-Wing Magazine: that's a great idea. I would subscribe for sure.

All suggestions above: new pilot cards (great for helping some ships without the need of repaints); errata'ed cards, missions; interviews; posters...

EDIT: but it could be like 3 or 4 issues per year (or more).

Annual? What's the point in that?

I mean, we live in a world where people are gagging for previews and weekly isn't often enough so what the **** would something ANNUAL achieve?

This is the internet.

I would love something like this. I'm a sucker for scenarios. While many of the official ones are unbalanced in some way, they still provide another objective besides "kill 'em all". I also love how there's always a little narrative for each one. Fixed cards would be nice as well, as it would allow players- who maybe are subscribed to the magazine but don't get to play much- stay updated with everything. Heck, FFG would probably have the magazine be a split between X-wing, Armada, and Assault, as I doubt they would focus on just one game.

I agree that it should at least be quarter-ly. That way, each magazine would still have at least one publication (ace box or wave etc.) and one event series (worlds, store, regional, national...) to discuss.

So I guess my idea, of a sexy female TIE fighter pilot, stepping out of her TIE and slowly taking her off uniform is off the table then.......

What if there is an interview with her?!? would than make it OK?

I will only be buying it for the articles...

I swear.

New pilots for stuff like the TIE Phantom and TIE Punisher. You know how much money they would make on something like that?

The thought behind anual is that FFG will have four Star Wars miniatures games. Each quarter a different miniatures game could get an anual release.

I don't think FFG has the staff or focus to produce more than one of these for each game each year.

FFG needs a better excuse to spend development time on errata. An anual "guaranteed" "have to do it" scheduled errata that is a physical product would do wonders to not only motivate them but to also sets player expectations.

This idea for an x-wing magazine was spawned by wanting a an imperial assalt magazine that would function as a cheap way to get people playing skirmish. Include Maps, Tokens, command cards, and all people need to add is a dice pack for a playable game.

Also I don't think any single FFG miniatures game is meant to fill a quarterly magazine. They are not quite as prolific or life dominating as something like war machine.

NoQuarter prime is a bi monthly because war machine is your whole life.

the x-wing annual in my imagination is not meant to replace the internet. It's meant to do the things the internet is bad at. Like long form content and getting physical things in people's hands. Also keeping them down to one a year means it's easier to make them products that get reprinted. This would be critical if things like new pilots were included as x-wing products are not supposed to go out of print.
