Secondary weapon question

By Bane501st, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I'm new to the game I've only played two games. I have the force awakens core rule book which states if all requirements are met you can shoot your secondary weapon. Now I found the original rule book pdf online this morning that states you make only make one attack in combat phase with either your primary or secondary weapon. So my question is since the force awakens core rules is the most current and does not state that you can only shoot once with either a primary or secondary weapon. Can I shoot with both primary and secondary weapons in the same combat phase if all requirements are met or is there a errata that I don't know about that states you can only shoot one weapon in the combat phase. Thanks for any clarification to this.

No errata necessary,

" During the Combat phase, each ship has an opportunity to perform one attack, starting with the ship with the highest pilot skill and continuing in descending order." - Force Awakens Rules Reference "Combat Phase"

"A ship can perform one attack when it becomes the active ship during the Combat phase. To perform an attack, the ship resolves the following steps in order:" - Force Awakens Rules Reference "Attack"

Both of these say a ship may perform one attack when it becomes the active ship in the combat phase. There is nothing in the secondary weapons section that says a ship can perform a second attack, only that a ship may choose a secondary weapon if all of the requirements are met.

" If all requirements are met, the attacker can declare that it is using the secondary weapon during the "Declare Target" step" - Force Awakens Rules Reference "Secondary Weapons"

Alright thanks for the quotes and awesome feedback.

I had the exact same question when playing yesterday with my son. He fired 3 times at me with his Firespray (primary, HLC and some missiles/torpedoes). I died horribly much to his enjoyment :)

So this also means you cannot fire your primary weapon at one target and your secondary weapon at another target. Right ? I've seen videos where the guys fire more than once with their ship but that might be the result of a special card/ability. I shall watch it again.

Edit : it came from a special pilot ability (IG-88B) which is what threw me off :)

There is a common crew card called Gunner that allows you to attack again with your primary if the first shot misses. There are some other things that have similar "Gunner effects" that enable additional attacks beyond the standard one shot per round, either from a miss or some other trigger. These do NOT use up your one free attack even if triggered before your standard one (unless the card specifies otherwise).

Also there are a small number of cards, Twin Laser Turret being the most common, that will automatically fire twice when used but again these will specify clearly on the card.

Note that "perform this attack twice" weapons ( Twin Later Turret and Cluster missiles ) must attack the same ship with the second attack.

In addition to IGb there's also: Gunner , Baze Malbus , BTL-A4 title, and TIE/D title which allow another attack without the requirement that it be the same target.

Corran Horn also allows for an additional attack, but it comes during the End Phase (before you begin cleaning up unused Focus and Evade tokens.)

On the topic of additional attacks with secondary weapons there is also Snap Shot , a secondary weapon that is explicitly used when it is not that ship's turn to attack, usually not even during the combat phase!

(For extra confusion it's not even equipped to a weapons slot!)

On top of that, not all the cards in "weapons" slots are even weapons anymore... I think every one of the traditional "secondary weapon" upgrade types other than Turret have some sort of card which isn't a weapon.

In short, Secondary Weapons are things with the Attack: header, regardless of slot.

And regardless, you only get one shot with one weapon in the combat phase, unless an upgrade or pilot ability says otherwise. Just existing, isn't saying otherwise.
