Size of Gaming mats

By Porkchop Express, in X-Wing

I've noticed that while the majority of X-wing mats are 3' x 3' some are 90cm x 90cm (such as Ultimate Guard). I also seem to be remember that some of the mats givrn as prizes were 90cm instead of 3'.

Can anyone advise on any which are 90cm, as these would fit my table better?

Get that metic **** outta here! This is Murica, we use Murican stuff like how many Rhode Islands can fit in a stadium or how many hands long something is.

Metric is the future. As someone who spent a decade working in aerospace, the constant dive between imperial and metric is soul destroying at times.

The difference between the 3ft and 90cm mats is theoretically just shy of 15mm. In practice, the "90cm" mats are often a smidgen bigger, and the 3ft mats are often a smidgen smaller, so unless space is at an absolute premium (like your tabletop is exactly 90cm +/-0), you won't see much difference between the mats.

90 cm is roughly 35-7/16 inches. (35.44") It does look like Ultimate Guard is 90cm, but I would guess most in the USA are sized to 36"

Absolutely. Table?? What table??

Oh, how I hate that. Nothing like intentionally looking remedial.

Unless they're System Open mats, which are 36 1/4". Grrr.

People have been saying "metric is the future" since the 1970s.

It won't happen. America will always use the Queens proper measurements.

Actually, it's hands TALL. They still measure horses that way, I think.

Even though they gave up on it 'cept for their monetary system.

FFG aims their mats at 36". However, actual application of that has been somewhat irregular.

Both of the Starkiller Base maps my club has are basically long on the same dimension (close to 38" wide, but still only 36") and its the other direction for Hoth, which means they line up with the standard mats only in a single orientation (since we have to double up mats for Armada)

Psst, that’s part of the joke

That's what we've been playing on since X-wing released. You know -- black starfield, bunch of asteroids?

Regarding our currency. All that you mentioned are multiples of 10 or divisible into 10.

Not enough coffee to get joke.

Man, I wish Murica would go to the metric system. It’s so mush easier and makes so much more sense. It’s clearly superior in every way but that’s what happens when people fear change.

I'm just going to leave that here...

Correct answer to the question of size is that the mats should be exactly 3 range rulers in length (3x30=90cm).

Yeah - that is kind of curious. With templates and bases, dimensioned in mm, why wouldn't you just make all of the components a metric size?

May have something to do with the original vendor of the mats. They may have had somebody quote them 3' x 3' as a standard size.

36x36 play mats?!? My word! We've been playing on 36x54 custom mat for awhile now. Really let's your play style breath.

I guess that's why we haven't landed on the moon lately.

No, that would be due to massive NASA budget cuts. Besides, been there, done that. They’re in the planning stages of a Mars trip. Good luck getting the budget for that, though.

we should all just use natural units!
