Questions about Lightning Reflexes

By Alekzanter, in X-Wing Rules Questions

For sake of simplicity, assume I'm flying a T-70 Red Squadron Vet equipped with Lightning Reflexes and Proton Torpedoes that is not stressed. May I execute a white/green maneuver on its dial (ie: 2 bank), take a target lock action, then discard Lightning Reflexes to rotate 180°?

Card Text reads "After you execute a white or green maneuver on your dial, you may discard this card to rotate you ship 180°. Then receive 1 stress token after the 'Check Pilot Stress' step."

I've also read and understand the current FAQ entry regarding this card.

There's no specific order mandated for taking an action and using the card's ability, is there? Does this also mean I could 2 bank, boost, then rotate?

Thanks for the help.

You need to discard the card to use it right after your maneuver (it's trigger), and you get the stress between your maneuver and before your perform action step. It's the same timing as when you would overlap debris. You would need a card such as Pattern analyzer or Advanced sensors if you would want to use your action before taking that stress.

Hm. Can you quote a source?

From the FAQ under missed opportunities:

  • If a player forgets to declare a game effect during a specific timing window (such as declaring the target of Swarm Tactics at the start of the Combat phase), he may not execute that game effect at a later time.

The specific timing for this effect is after you execute a maneuver. If you move passed that point, you have skipped it's timing and cannot back track to activate it.

When all else fails, go read the rulebook.

From page 4 of the Rules Reference Guide.

Activations

1. Reveal Dial

2. Execute maneuver
2a) Move Ship
<< Trigger Lightning Reflexes to flip the ship 180-degrees after performing a white/green maneuver >>
2b) Check Pilot Stress
<< Stress from Lightning Reflexes happens here >>
2c) Clean Up

3. Perform Action
<< You cannot take your TL action as you have a stress from LR >>

So close, but not quite.

Lightning Reflexes triggers after performing a manoeuvre, which means compleating all of the associated steps. As such it triggers after 2c. That may seem crazy based on the wording of the card, but note that the card is so old that it is written for an old version of the rules where execute manoeuvre and check pilot stress were whole phases unto themselves. This version of the rules is obsolete. Just like Kanan Jarrus and new 'Falcon title, Lighting Reflexes triggers after 'clean up' and adds a stress immediately.

Functionally identical, but different in nuance.
