Going to my first tournament tomorrow. Looking for input from my peers.

By TrollCandy, in X-Wing

Like the title says I'm going to my first tournament tomorrow. Ive been playing for about a year now, but its always been casual. Im looking to make a fun list more so than something super meta. Never played bombs so I'm not even gonna touch that route. But I'm open to suggestions from more experienced players on here. Anything from rock placement or openings or anything really. Ill be sure to check back in tomorrow and let you all know how I did :)

Play what you enjoy, learn from your losses, stay hydrated and keep up your energy, and remember that if you're having fun you're already winning.

Good luck! Fly casual! Pack snacks! Double check your kit to make sure you have everything! And for safety, triple check your kit to make sure you have everything!

If you've been playing for a year you should already kind of know what you enjoy playing. Just do that your first time.

That's how you will start to learn rock placement and openings and blah blah blah etc.

I don't believe you'll learn anything especially useful tonight or tomorrow morning that will massively improve your performance.

Well...what the fella said about triple checking that you have all your components is the exception. That is KEY.

I wouldn't sweat the rest too much. It's not like showing up for a tournament suddenly changes the game from a good time into a " ah **** what now ?omg this is hard work" situation.

Try hard,have fun,don't be a ****.

When it's over relax, reflect on if it was enjoyable and worth pursuing further.

Bring a water bottle and remember to

make pew pew noises every time you roll atk dice.

Everytime you roll defense dice yell "shiver me timbers!"

if you evade say "avast me hearties!"

if you don't say "tartar sauce!" (as piratey as possible)

Run your all your ships with at least 4 standard pegs. Bonus points if you put standard pegs on top of an epic peg.

When you take a focus action declare "I'm in the zone. The Danger zone!!!"

when you loose your shields exclaim "I have not yet begun to fight!"

Running units with astromechs? when using them say "talk to me goose!"

Dress up as a character. Bonus points if it's kylo ren and you have him in your list. Extra bonus points if you do dramatic things every time you apply ISYTDS.

(Same thing applies to chewie, but instead of a dramatic action you do your best wookiee impersonation)

Place your rocks as closely as possible in the center of the map. Declare it to be the cornucopia.

Eat cheetos. Offer to shake your opponent's hand/ move their ships for them. Bonus points if you lick your fingers beforehand.

When attacking at range one say "let's get darkwing dangerous!"

okay, so those aren't really what you should do, but what you should do:

A) fly what you love. I don't care if it's Fel's Wrath or Soontir Fel.

B) fly casual, as in, have a positive attitude.

C) HAIL HYDRATE!

I appreciate everyones input thank you! bringing some refreshments is a solid idea. Also going through my components as I type this; laying everything out in front of me to visualize it all. I realize I don't have the skill to be top "meta-game" but I tried to compile a list to be competitive and fun to fly. It is as follows;

IG-88C (36)

FCS(2)

Attani (1)

Autoblaster (5)

Autothrusters (2)

Fenn Rau (28)

Attani (1)

Plasmas (3)

Inaldra (15)

Attani (1)

Heavy Scyk (2)

Plasmas (3)

I went back n forth about putting Intensity on IG, but figured attani accomplished the same goal for a point less. Given IG's ability of free evade after a boost.

Overall I think it will be a fun list. The "plan" is to keep Fenn and Inaldra together and run IG along another side to flank.

EDIT: dropped Glitterstim for a 1 point bid.

Hmm. That IG looks interesting. Lots of nice things working together. That thing barreling down on me with a boost, evade, focus, and potiental Target Lock for some autoblaster action in there would give me more than a moment of pause.

I would suggest switching out torps on Fenn for Autothrusters and the Concord Dawn title for the same points. He's practically a missile already. Now, if that isn't what you are going for, then ignore this. Follow your heart!

That was the idea...if theres one thing I've learned from watching videos of top tier games is that action efficiency is pretty important. I do like your suggestion about Fenn..I feel like it would yield more than just plasmas.

1, Shower tonight/tomorrow morning. If you shower tonight, Deo in the morning.

2, Double and triple check.

3, Waterwaterwaterwaterwaterwaterwaterwaterwaterwaterwater! (and a Gatorade).

4, Bring Something snacky.

5, Fly casual.

this is pretty much what you need.

I'd highly recommend flying a list with a high health value and/or at least one turret. Bombs are incredibly strong, and very hard to play against if you have little experience. In order of faction preference, you should probably fly:
1. A ghost. Preferably with a TLT. This ship almost laughs at bombs, and has a lot of other utility besides.
2. A ShadowCaster. Asajj is best, but Ketsu would be good too. They have a lot of durability in the endgame.
3. A Decimator. Chiraneau is the best pilot here, and he works well against a lot of other aces.

If you're willing to sell your gaming soul, JM5Ks are a very strong option. Dengar is currently in vogue, with Contracted scouts not far behind. Two of them with Fen Rau is a great option.

Your big opponents are probably going to be (in a rough order of power):

Nym. An excellent bomber who can do massive damage while dodging all your arcs at PS 10.
Miranda. At 50 points or so, she's an incredible endgame closer and an ace-killer in the early game. Kill her first, pretty much regardless of what else is on the board.
Dengar. Extreme jousting power combined with high PS make him very dangerous early game.
Dash. He'll win against almost anything PS 6 or below, and is still good against aces. In the current Rey + Lone wolf form he isn't quite as good an arc-dodger though, so you can pin him down if you're clever.
Fair Ship Rebels. It's less a single ship than a combination. Look it up and be afraid...
Corran. Since wave 4 he's had one good build, and it's very good indeed. He has spike damage and the best regen in the game, so try to kill him early.
Biggs of any kind. He's had a lot of boosts recently, so watch out for him.

On the whole, the Imperial faction is by far the hardest to fly at the moment, so I'd recommend a Rebel or Scum list for your first tournament.

Fly what you know best and keep positive a(l)titude.
