I haven't played Armada myself, but most guys in my community complained there was little Rebels could do to a VSD in core set games, so they kinda shelved it until they got Wave 1.

Lol. Today i've attended a board games fair in Poznań, Poland and conducted 6 intro games with core set Armada with inexperienced players on both sides, resulting in 3 rebel and 3 imperial wins. In spare time, I've played two games with my somewhat experienced buddy, resulting, again, in one rebel and one imperial win.
If both players are equally experienced, the Armada core set is extremely well balanced. If not, the more experienced wins. It all comes down to good/bad flying
