Rule Question: Weakness - Indebted

By Raahk, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

So here is another rule question:

How does the basic weakness indebted work? As this is a permanent card, it stays in play after i have drawn it which means it carrys over to the next mission.

Does that mean i draw another basic weakness for the next campaign mission?

Nope, that's just your Basic Weakness for the duration of the campaign. Just like any other one, once you select it at the beginning it stays with you. This one is special that it starts each scenario in play instead of shuffled into your deck.

I always assumed that weaknesses are drawn random. According to yoour statement i assume that's not so?

Basic Weaknesses are assigned at random. Most weaknesses are then shuffled into their respective players' decks, to be randomly drawn throughout the campaign. Permanent weaknesses (of which Indebted is the sole example, for now) instead start each scenario their players' threat areas.

I feel like there's some fundamental misunderstanding since I can't figure out your question, I'm sorry!! Weaknesses are assigned randomly, if that's what you mean by draw? I didn't mean "select" as in choose. Poor word choice on my part.

You select a random basic weakness when you construct your deck at the beginning of a campaign. It's then part of your deck, and acts like any other appropriate card. Since Indebted is Permanent, that means it starts each game in play. The others are all shuffled into your deck and wait to be drawn.

Now i get it! I always thought i wasn't meant to look at the basic weakness i was randomly assigned. It makes alle sense now! I feel so silly right now

I thank you all for your help

A lot of people play this way, but it's not actually a rule.

People who want to maintain the surprise will put the Indebted into the weakness pile face up, and the others face down, then shuffle and draw blindly. You can see if you got Indebted, but still not know what the other is.

I like this idea a lot

My friends and I put Indebted into face down with all the other basic weaknesses when drawn randomly and only have it “become” permanent from the moment anyone draws it during a game.

Lessens the impact in the first few games, but adds to the surprise, which we feel is worth it.

A card with the permanent keyword starts each game in play and is not shuffled into your investigator deck during setup.

I can see why you'd do this, but Indebted is already the most gentle of the basic weaknesses, hands down. The low impact is offset by the guaranteed occurrence. Again, I can see why you would like it thematically, but it's really turning it into no weakness at all.

Even more so if that weakness decided to join my Wendy's amulet and never appear throughout the campaign!

Indeed. I once had it with Jenny. Might as well have not been there.

If you're going to softball it by not having it out, then maybe once it does come out, you can no longer gain resources until you've paid back the accumulated debt. That could get hard to track though.
