Does Kaanan/Biggs cut it these days?

By Rat of Vengence, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all, I've had a fair bit of fun playing Kaanan/Biggs, I find it is far from 'point and shoot' if you want to get a solid win. I haven't played much for a month or two, any advice on how such a list deals with Nym and FSR?

I've got;

Kanan Jarrus — VCX-100 38
Fire-Control System 2
Twin Laser Turret 6
Rey 2
Recon Specialist 3
Engine Upgrade 4
Ghost 0
Ship Total: 55
"Zeb" Orrelios — Attack Shuttle 18
"Chopper" 0
Phantom 0
Ship Total: 18
Biggs Darklighter — X-Wing 25
R4-D6 1
Integrated Astromech 0

Ship Total: 26

I'm thinking of dropping the EU for R2D2, just to get a few more hits out of him. Thoughts?

Pretty sure the chap who won the Canadian Nationals flew it.

Yes, drop Engine for R2-D2. Bring Tac Jammer.

I'd always recommend Jan Ors over Rey, it's good early game to feed Biggs Evade tokens and it's good late game for Kanan to be able to take a Focus/Evade mix.

As for whether it's a good meta call right now or not, I don't know. It doesn't seem like it should be AWFUL.

Thanks fellas. I must admit I haven't run Rey in this yet, but I thought storing the focus tokens would be a good idea, and the times I've given Biggs an evade I've rolled two or three focus results :P

Any ideas for taking on Nym? I'm thinking go in hard and blast the **** out of his 1 green dice; less time exposed to bombs.

I imagine Nym is why this isn't doing well right now - he'll just hide in your R1 bubble.

Ion Turret maybe?

Rey is 100% the right choice on Kanan. IMO she's the best rebel crew by a mile, but the internet likes whining about Sabine too much to catch on.

You don't need to worry about Nym with Kanan. Obvs. don't let him barrel roll into your TLT blind spot. If he's in a position to drop a bomb on you, you should be able to get the positioning to get your primary weapon doing the work. Ideally though, try to stay at range and grind him down with your TLT.

I think the reason you don't see so much of the Ghost at the moment is that most rebel players have embraced Dash, Miranda and/or Nym.

The Ghost can still do a great job.

And it eats Nym for breakfast. Long before Nym even dreams about getting into that blind spot, he's eating at least 4 TLT shots.

Leaving him with 6 hull, the same 6 hull he has at the end of the game.

I know Nym has the PS and barrel roll over me, but it should be reasonably tricky for him to avoid missing the R1 bubble AND front/rear arcs. I hope :P

Yeah if he runs away and doesn't engage again.

Or are you implying that Nym can indefinitely keep himself in Kanan's blind spot?

If so, no.

As well as the TLT, Kanan has a 4 dice primary that he can shoot out of his rear and front facing arcs.

Which isn't to say that any Kanan/Biggs list can automatically beat any list containing Nym.

Nym's wingman will have to pull their weight to win this one, cos if Nym engages he's dog food.

I will say the engine upgrade on Kanan at the Canadian Nationals was a big problem for me to face. He could force the range as he preferred against other 'Biggs' lists. That said, Bohan is a pretty sharp player so it may just fit his individual flying style better.

Rey/Recon are the best choices, no other Crew options are better on Kanam than them and both push it over the top. Engine is a very nice tech for the meta. A friend put countermeasures on Kanan since our meta had a lot of Omega Leader and alpha strikes.

That slot and the droid slot are the options to tweak to your meta. I prefer M9-G8 on Biggs, but again depends on what you normally play against. What’s your local scene like?

Jan Ors does make a certain amount of sense to me, as something which can keep Biggs up longer early game. For mid-to-late game after Biggs is dead, having a huge stack of Rey tokens can do pretty much the same thing as the Focus+Evade from RecSpec+Jan.

I know Finn crew also used to be quite popular in Kanan-Biggs lists. Between FCS and Rey focus tokens, you can basically treat your primary like it was 5-dice. Sure, TLT is great against Nym, but if you catch him in arc and throw 5 hits on a primary, that's better than the 2 from a pair of twin shots.

Well, had a 5 round tournament today, and ended up 3/5. Quite happy with that, one win was over a VERY highly regarded local player, and both my losses were narrow (new Chewie on 2 hull for one...).

The build was able to deal with Nym quite effectively, but Dengar was troublesome. I still don't know why people complain about Nym, yes he is uber, but he has 1 green dice. Simple as that.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it :)

There are some kinds of ships Nym obliterates, and others which obliterate him. He is very polarized. I mean, lots of folks say the reason we don't see Fenn Rau as much these days (at Meta-Wing, he's down at 19, below Gold Squadron Pilot) is because of Nym alone, and I can believe that. Any single pilot who can change the shape of the game that much is noteworthy.

The blog from the person who won the Canadian National. You can get their two cents:

An excerpt on why they went with it:

The meta seemed right for Kanan Biggs. The four TLT shots are strong against Nym and Miranda and bypasses Selflessness and Draw Their Fire in Biggs lists. Contracted Scouts are a tough matchup, but fewer of them run Boba Fett.
