Clone Wars pbp Anyone?

By Rabobankrider, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hey all! So I've always been a fan of star wars, and really did enjoy the clone wars setting that was used for the films and animated series, and was partially inspired by Alien Happy Hours 'Lucky Sevens' podcast (worth a listen), so I thought I'd try run a clone wars pbp! For anyone interested, my credentials aren't particularly extensive. I've run a couple of EotE campaigns for mates, and they didn't hate what I was doing, so that's a plus!I have read up on all the material I can get hold of though, so I should be able to do a good job. For this pbp my aim would be to focus around a squad operating during the clone war, where there'd be plenty of combat and excitement to be had.

Regarding characters, I am using all three settings (Edge of the Empire, Force and Destiny and Age of Rebellion), and player are welcome to choose whatever they want out of the books so long as they can justify it (eg. a clone trooper gambler might be a bit of a stretch). Having said that, I would like to limit the number of jedi to 1, ideally a padawan (commander) to lead the squad. For the rest of the players, I would really appreciate if they were ok playing clones, as I think the squad dynamic could make for some interesting rp. I would be willing to have 1 player swap out their clone for a mercenary type, such as an outsourced tracker etc (think auxiliary units like the Celts serving the Romans in France).

Also, I would like to try something I was toying with regarding character creation. I would like players to begin the game without a career or specialization. Instead, I'd like for them to start of with the universal career of recruit (or force sensitive emergent for the jedi). The idea behind this is that the player will start of as recruits or pupils, and will be undergoing training for the equivalent of the first couple of sessions. At the end of the training, the characters would be assigned their roles based on their performances (and taking into account what players want their character to be). They'd still get their free specialization at this, but it could be fun to start of as fresh recruits, plus it gives some greater freedom for future developments. Want to achieve the rank of ARC trooper? We can sort that! Want to make an elite squad of pilots? Why not!

So it may seem like an odd idea, but if you're still interested please contact me! I don't mind how much (or little) rp or pbp you've done, we all have to start somewhere, and I'll do whatever I can to help out with stuff. So send me a message or post on here if you're interested, and hope to hear from you soon!

Ok, sounds good to me!

I would like to give it a try with a rank & file clone trooper. I have not much experience with EotE (directed the basic modules only so far), but I am still diggesting slowly the EotE rulebook and working up how characters are created. I will need some guidance in character creation but I am willing to play anything. :)

I have experience with PbP games and experience with rpgs in general.

And I love star wars. even if I doubt that will be a novelty around here xD

For the character, CT-7708 or "Quiet" is a fairly careful trooper. he can go into a breach like everybody, but is happier when the squad takes a careful approach and goes for overwhelming force on unsuspecting targets in order to avoid casualties among its numbers. Ambushes, traps, long range snipping, unseen recon... That is his thing.

if that is OK to you, I am in.

Alright soldier, I hope your ready for a whole lot o' trouble, cause we're causing it.?????

I'll throw my hat in the ring, I'll take the last Clone Trooper slot.

CT-9182 aka "Dragoon" heavy weapons specialist, he loves nothing more to blow up clankers with either his thermal detonators or the biggest gun he can find!

I'm going for a Soldier Gunner, are we doing knight level play or starting with basic characters?

Regarding the rule system, because this is more of a military focus, I was thinking of using the age of rebellion system over edge of the empire. The only thing this changes really is that instead of obligation, duty is used. I'm more than happy to help you with character creation, and from the sounds of thing you'll be aiming for a scout trooper? I'll send you some material to peruse for your characters 'graduation'.

As characters will be starting as shinies or padawans, I was going to have characters begin as basic characters. For those using clones I will link the mandalorian rules from 'Friends like these' for character creation. Also, I should have mentioned with the exception of the merc, you don't need to worry about credits, as you gear will be issued by the republic upon graduation. Having said that Matt you can ask for gear as well, but the credits give you a bit more freedom for personalizing your character.

Also, for anyone else thinking of joining, I am using a squad structure similar to the animated series with Domino squad, so there can be five clone if anyone else wants in. So far we have 1 padawan slot and 3 clone slots left.

So far we have:

  • One stealth based mercenary
  • Two clones (1 heavy support and one scout)

Ok,

So we are Mandalorians (basic species) with the Recruit career and we get to go for 1 specialization. How many ranks in abilities do we get out of the recruit career? 4? There are only 4 favoured abilities there, so it would be 1 rank in each? And then 2 ranks more from our specialization?

Thx :)

You will only be getting your specialization later when you graduate from Kamino. When you get your specialization you will receive 4 free rnaks for your career, and then 2 free ranks for your specialization. As this is the first time I've tried running things this way, I'll say we use the same system as the regular careers so you will get 2 free ranks from the recruit career.

So it is 1-2 ranks from mandalorian, 2 from recruit and 2 from our specialization. Then 105 XP to spend on stuff.

Am I doing it right?

This is how it works:

You start with the initial mandalorian stats with a free rank in either a knowledge or combat skill.

You have 105 xp that you can add to through the duty section of the AoR core rulebook, which you can spend on attributes, skill ranks or recruit talents.

You then get 2 free ranks in the skills of your choice from the recruit career.

After a certain stage in the campaign, you will receive your proper career and specialization. Here you will get 4 free ranks in skills from the career, and 2 free ranks in skills from the specialization.

But at this stage you only want to go as far as the recruit, you won't have your proper specialization till later.

Hey could I get the Duty options? AOR is the only book I don't have.

Yea please, the more the better, it's the one line I don't have a book from.

The link I added should have most of what you need I think.

Ok. I think I got it.

CT-7708 "Tane"

2 3 2 3 3 2

Athletics 1
Discipline
Ranged Heavy 1 (from Mandalorian)
Survival 1
Vigilance

Stealth1

Outdoorsman (5)

3 characteristics at 3 (90)

Outdoorsman (5)

Stealth at 1 (10, not favoured)

105 grand total. Correct? Sounds good?

Changed the nickname of the clone since he is an outdoorsman, probably sensibly more than his companions. He LIKES running around and trekking on long marches, something his companions do not.

Or we can have the group give nicknames instead of assigning them ourselves.

@Rabobankrider do I go for Ranged Heavy or Gunnery? I'm aiming for the big guns, but would they give a recruit anything bigger than a Z-6 Rotary Cannon? The rotary Cannon I think is the only one that doesnt use Gunnery.

@MonCal I think we should give each other Nicknames since we are going through training, that's where the clones usually get their names.

Hmm, I have never done PbP before, but this seems like a good place to give it a shot. Also a good place to finally start playing rather than GMing.

CT-4216 reporting in. Considering making a Medic / Vanguard. Will leave the nickname up to you guys.

Also will make a character sheet later, as I will be busy in the meantime.

Alright, think I got the character sheet set up. Will add in Duty and Morality later, although I wonder if we fill that out after training.

Yep, this all looks great! I think we'll do as Shlambate said and let your squad mates give you your names due to your actions or personality. Also, bear in mind when you select your duty you can gain more xp at the cost of your duty score.

I would recommend Ranged (Heavy), at least for the moment, as bigger guns that aren't mounted on vehicles usually need a team to operate. There will be plenty of opportunities to use the gunnery skill if you choose to go for that, especially after kamino where transports etc will be in use.

Welcome to the squad! A medic or vanguard sound great, but bear in mind that you only get 1 free specialization, and a second if/when you choose to take it will cost additional xp. Just been over your sheet and it looks good for the most part, but there are a couple of changes needed. At this moment you wouldn't have gunnery or piloting as a career skill, and unless my maths is off your total spent xp 110, while the starting xp is 105. Did you add to it using your duty?

This sounds like an interesting game, and I'd love to play, if you'll have me. I'd be interested in the Padawan slot since nobody has picked that up.

The concept might be a padawan who lost his master quite early on in the war and while the council waits for a master to become available to take him, he's sent to Kamino as a part of an experimental program to help forge closer ties between Jedi and the clone troopers at an early stage.

Quick question about skills, since the Force-Sensitive Emergent doesn't have any skills attached to it. Would I then start the game with no skills? That seems rather boring.

And just quickly a question about Force Powers. Would I be able to purchase the basic powers with a mentor discount, since the padawan will have been trained in the Jedi temple with access to mentors etc.?

You are most welcome to take the role of the padawan! Regarding the background, everything seems fine to me, but I would prefer you to have some kind of mentor on Kamio for jedi specific training, even if it was simply working with Shaak Ti.

For skills, as you are working with clones, and will be coming a jedi commander eventually, I think it would make sense to start with the same career skills and free as the recruits, but taking your talents from the jedi tree.

For powers, you have access to all basic powers during creation, but for the mentor discount from what I've read it can only be used after creation. If you work with a mentor on Kamino during training, you can get the discount then.
