Why did the X-Wing die?

I'd love to see something like:

Alliance Training: (x wing only) Title; 3 points

You may not take this upgrade if you have a boost in your action bar

When you reveal a bank maneuver, you may instead treat it as a white talon roll of the same bearing and direction.

I'd much rather use [Tech] as the filter - that way it doesn't fall over if someone for some reason wants to buy a T-65 an engine upgrade.

What if they just made a bunch of new astromechs that were t65 specific? And each one could do something different? (Super specific, I know)

But what if we had:

Astromech-A : 1 point

-The cost for this card is reduced to -1 if the associated pilot is a generic pilot.

-Your action bar gains Barrel Roll.

Astromech-B : 2 points

-All 2 bank maneuvers are considered green maneuvers, and your action bar gains Evade and Boost.

Astromech-C : 0 points

-Decrease the cost of an equipped torpedo by 2 points.

Astromech-D : 3 points

-Action- If you are in range 1-2 of the opponent and they are within your primary firing arc, you may perform a target lock action, as well as a focus action.

I think these are kind of my main gripes with the ship itself. The first two thoughts are an attempt to fix the maneuverability of the ship. The third is aimed at helping the ships carry ordinance at a cost-effective rate. The fourth is aimed at action economy. I would love to see upgrades *like* these (my math can be completely off here, these were just thoughts), because this allows my x wings to be versatile. It would breath a whole lot of life into the ship, much like what I am hoping we are going to see from the Guns for Hire and K Fighter expasion. I would love to see people flying different types of x wings into matches. This can completely change the dynamic and what ships they are paired with.

Just my youthful optimism at its finest. Anyone else care to critique or add on?

The issue with the Astromech fixes are Y-wings and E-wings also need help and Astromechs are meant to be universally used. So limiting them to Just X-wings while viable leaves other ships that could benefit from them out.

Astromech A - makes the Vector Thrusters obsolite essentially for generic pilots.

B: steps on the R2 Territory and would likely make the card defunct in most cases.

C: not sure how a free Astromech reduces the cost of Torpedoes maybe a deadeye type ability but not a point reduction.

D Abuse Abuse Abuse with Aces that have EPT Slots and PTL or intensity, with things like vector Thrusters or engine upgrade.

Agreed. The problem with everyone wanting to give X-wings Barrel Roll is that they already have three ways to get it:

  • Vectored Thrusters
  • BB-8
  • Expert Handling

Making them all redundant seems bad design.

Plus it's a 2 point engine upgrade, even ignoring access to the evade action.

I could see an astromech acting as something akin to either a scavenger crane or munitions failsafe mechanic?

More importantly than this, it's rather too close to R7-T1 to feel original for my taste.

I am very very against free buffing of ships. It makes sense that older ships would seem weak compared to newer ones. BUT as they got older, they would also be worth less. Except in cases where the ship is genuinely bad, I firmly believe that points reduction is the best way to "fix" weaker ships. And, on a similar note, except in cases where ships are legitimately unbalanced, nerfs should be points increases.

It didn't die.

I play it. I like it.

Not just biggs. I mean, it's way cheaper than a T-70, a little more survival than a B-Wing (with integrated astro), it has no repositioning actions, but a viable dial. It's average in everything it does, but you can spam it for a good attack (4 rookies and a Z or 4 red squadron, still a lot of red dice, the risk of losing one before attacking is lower than 4B) and some droids have nice bonuses, and the X-Wing unique pilots have still some of the better pilot abilities in the game (Biggs, Wedge, Wes, Luke, Tarn, Hobbie - everyone, paired with the right astromech can still be good).

Are there better ship in the game? Sure. But they are more role-specific. The x-wing is a simple machine: it flies, it shoots.

Herd mentality that the X-Wing is dead and buried. Therefore no-one even tries them out anymore and just follows the herd advice reinforcing that X-Wing is dead mantra.

Actual data is currently placing the X-Wing at 7th place in the meta - thanks to Biggs no doubt - higher than the T-70. It actually places higher than all the Imperial ships http://meta-wing.com/ships? . If it had a buff it would become the new JumpMaster. Maybe that’d be a good thing though.

I’d like the X-]Wing to have the tech slot. Maybe a title.
