Introducing the Preemptive Strike - a "Pocket" Star Destroyer

By Bullox, in X-Wing

“Pocket Star Destroyer” is an informal, loose classification of frigates, carriers and destroyers that emulate Imperial Star Destroyers in form but are smaller and less powerful than Star Destroyers. These ships can perform several tasks such as patrolling shipping lanes, carrier support for larger fleets or directly engaging Rebel or pirate forces. Promising Imperial officers are often assigned command of one of these ships as training before being given the awesome responsibilities of commanding a Star Destroyer.

The Preemptive Strike is an Anti-Starfighter Destroyer. Heavily armed and armored, it is designed to engage enemy Starfighters at close range as well as all but the largest capital ships in battle.

It consists of three sections: Fore Section, Mid (Command) Section, and Aft Section.

I created a few upgrades as well:

Oh wow. 250 points base?

I like that it's basically a raid boss thing. But you realize that 12 academy pilots is not legal in Epic, right? (Also, it's 144 points, so... uh...)

I designed the custom-made ship base so that it is compatible with the regular Huge ship maneuver template. Here are some pics showing it chasing a Rebel Corvette.

Shoot. This was supposed to be an album. I'll try add the other pics when I figure this out.

Edit: This series shows four speed 1 right banks. The last pic shows where it ends up after a total of eight speed 1 right banks. It was able to make a full circle without running off the 3'x3' play area.

Yes it is:

Many people play with more than 300 points as well. Obviously, you can't use this Pocket Star Destroyer in tournament play, so it's casual only and casual play has no set rules.

Nice! That's the Revell Rogue One ISD, right? I used 2 for my 3-part Battle of Scarif scenario:

Yes, it's the Revell model. That's a super cool Battle of Scarif scenario. And you're right, this would be for custom missions only. We're not sure yet how we plan to use it - kinda "Cart before the horse" situation.

Thanks! Too bad I forgot the command towers on the ISDs for the second mission. Derp!

Why the uneven distribution of HP and Shields on the fore??

I like the ring of ASD instead of ISD. :)

I'm kind of treating the Fore section as representing the bulk of the ship's main hull. The Mid and Aft sections represent smaller, more specific portions of the ship; mid/command section includes the bridge and hangar deck and the aft section basically just includes the engines. The ship's base is divided in such a way that the Fore section can be targeted for attacks more easily than the other more specific sections.

Off topic, but does anyone know how the detail on the Revell ISD compares to the Zevezda ISD? I'd like a giant centerpiece model to put on a shelf, and I'm not sure which to get.

They are exactly the same model. It measure 23.5 inches long when completed. Revell also has a less expensive snaptite version as well. I'm not sure of it's length.

I have the Snap-Tite version. It has a length of 15.75 inches.

Edit: Doing some research the Snap-tite is 1/4000; the other is 1/2700.

Which now makes sense about why @Bullox and @Refugeanoth 's versions look so much bigger than mine.

*sigh*

Time to buy another ISD kit. . .

Edit 2: Using a vehicles scaling equation from the GURPS RPG, the 1/2700 ISD model should have 3x the HP/Shields of the Raider, for what that's worth*.

*Which means your values are pretty good!!

Only now do you realize the true power of casual play X-Wing. . .

Hey @Darth Meanie , @weisguy119 , @Refugeanoth ,

Do any of you have a HotAC AI for your Star Destroyers? All of the missions I can find write-ups for use the Star Destroyers as static props with turrets and shield generators etc that need to be destroyed but I'd be interested in actually having it fly and take actions like other Epic ships.

No. I haven't done any HotAC yet, more's the pity. Is there the like for the Raider? I would think they could act the same if so.

There's a HOTAC AI card for the Raider in this thread:

Perhaps, you can gain some inspiration from it.

Those hull and shields are more like it. :)

If FFG did it they would be half that or less, like all the other woefully weak Epic ships LOL (2 Millennium Falcons = more hull+Shields than a corvette? Yeah right. :P )

Yes, it's the Revell model.

Does the model itself predate Rogue One - being originally sold as just "Star Destroyer" before receiving repacked for the Rogue One release?

It's just that the details (guns, bridge tower, etc) are more consistent with TESB Star Destroyers than those seen in Rogue One.

Actually I'm not sure about the Rogue One connection. The models are " Imperial Star Destroyer Model 9057 by Zvezda" and "Revell 1/2700 Imperial Star Destroyer". I'm pretty sure they are the exact same product.

I use the same movement example as the one I showed you a while back for the Omen, with 3 separate dials for slow, full and flank speeds. The ship itself is controlled by our Will of the Dark Side enemy player and doesn't use ai. I can't imagine the amount of work that would go into making something with 3 separate dials and movements as crazy as that thing can pull off.

Yeah, designing an AI for these ships would be incredibly complex. Mine has a single maneuver dial with the same maneuver choices as the other Epic ships. We're thinking about just going with player consensus for choosing maneuvers and actions but we may borrow some elements from Armada like having to choose maneuvers and actions a turn or two in advance.

I think that may be the Snap-Tite version @Darth Meanie was talking about. But you're right it does look like it has the same design features as the other two. I did a few google image searches and I have to agree, these all look like ESB Star Destroyers.

Perfect. It's what we expect from Rebel scum when they see an ISD. . . ;)
