Question on Acrylic Templates (non FFG ones)

By taulover55, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I've just ordered some Acrylic templates for my boy for his birthday and going from Cog'OTwo's stuff know that you need to fill the laser etched engraving with some form of Colour to make them pop.

My question is can this be done using Crayon?? I've ordered a grey tint with storm trooper engraving and have a copious amount of white crayons in the house but little in the way of white paint (except spray but theres no-way i'll let a hyperactive 7 year old loose with a spray can!). would it be a good substitute? they'll never be left anywhere hot enough to melt the crayon and he can have fun scribbling on the templates a bit before he gets to use them.

Mh I wouldn't recommend it I think, though I am not experienced with crayons. It is just a lot easier to paint depressions cleanly with liquid paints. Get some craft store acrylic paint for cheap.

I'd be surprised if it wouldn't work. You'd probably want to go over them with a hairdryer to set the wax in place afterwards though.

Thanks for the input guys.

I do have a spare range 1 and 2 acrylic from cog o two i could test it on thinking about it. I'll see what he wants to do, when he gets them, its not much for some Vallejo/citadel paints locally

Did you ever play the Red Box Dungeons & Dragons? They had you fill in the numbers on the dice with crayon too.

Back on topic though, I've tried the crayon method on acrylic templates and it works, it's just not as pretty as paint. And it can be messy.

Also, once you've got the wax into the grooves, you'll have to wipe (polish) the templates with a towel to get the excess wax off.

If you try the wax and don't like it, you can dip your templates into hot water which will soften and loosen the wax. Wax floats, so some of it will float away. Go in with a toothbrush to get the rest.

As for paint, you don't have to go with higher quality paints. You can pick up a tube/bottle at most craft stores for a bout a dollar or two.
