L5R RPG Open Beta Announcement

By Mirith, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

The way they are presenting this it sounds like it will be it's own standalone system and not a setting for Genesys. Also it didn't come up when they talked about the first couple setting books they had planned for Genesys. I wish they would have given us some details on the system in the article. Skills, techniques, advantages and disadvantages sound pretty similar to R&K character creation. Also seems like they are keeping the ring based stats considering the language in the Elements section.

there's also an L5R RPG forum now. I am super hyped!

Yes, but where is my table top game with pre-assembled miniatures?

Well, I'm excited.

OMK!!!!!!!

YES!!!!!

Sorry for the double post but OMK. Also, I would like to say that am glad FFG is doing a open beta. Given the overwhelming success of D&D 5th Edition, it seems like a smart move.

I would have liked a clear "uses Genesys / doesn't use Genesys", but a week from now will still be plenty of time to get in a pre-order if necessary.

I ANSWERED SPARROW IN THE OTHER BOX I THINK I'M DISQUALIFIED!

Good point! Why not just come out and say it, right?

FFG's Star Wars games were all published in open beta as well.

The difference there is that they printed the Beta books and made them available for sale. I can see merit and flaw to pdf vs hard copy although the hard copy nature of the Star Wars betas was more to do with their SW license limitations than a design choice, I suspect.

One HUGE advantage of FFG owning L5R (as opposed to Star Wars), official pdfs will finally be a thing again. Oh happy day!

Sad to see Roll and Keep go away, but I assumed it would. AEG used it for more than just L5R, so it wouldn't be part of the IP. Hopefully it will be a new system using the good aspects of their previous systems, rather than forcing it into their previous system.

You could get disqualified by that??
I answered Wasp Clan. :(

Given that this is an "open beta" I don't think you can get disqualified unless you just filled out profanity. Even then, they might not care.

I would find it immensely surprising if they made it not GeneSys based. Maybe since this is a major IP for them it will just be GeneSys, but with different names specific to L5R.

In base to this:

"Custom dice mechanics enable players to contribute to the unfolding story and decide whether their character succeeds, by how much, and how much it will cost them."

I think it's not GeneSys, but maybe they use other meanings for the same symbols (in the dice). Because this information is not available in the current GeneSys dice system

However, as I understand it, that could imply the whole "Well you rolled a success, but got the something bad happens as well symbol too". I know there are more technical terms for this, as I only have half looked at GeneSys and never played this Star Wars RPG, but if I remember right, there was a dice mechanic for "Well regardless of if you succeeded, this other bad thing happens" for the narrative, which could be the "cost" they reference. Not just "Well it costs you 1-3 <power> points depending on what you rolled".

The Minor Clan Alliance is not the Mantis.

Tonbo Karasu, retired Imperial Magistrate

Dragonfly representative to the Minor Clan Alliance

I'm hoping that this isn't just the Star Wars/Genesys system with the serial number filed off, and hopefully the game is playable for dishonorable/ronin types and not simply Clan samurai only.

Still next week will bring the first wave of information, we will all be ready for it.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too far. I really can't imagine they would put this much effort into their generic system, then not use that system for a flagship IP they are releasing at the same time.

Define playable? As in Ronin character can be as strong as an in-clan? Do you consider 4e ronin playable?

Keep in mind they might only initially release info about only a few schools for each great clan.
