Hero Squads

By Hawkman2000, in Star Wars: Legion

We're seeing squads units made up of troops, like Stormtroopers and Rebel Troopers led by hero units, like Vader and Luke, but how likely is it we may see squad unit options made up of named characters? For example, maybe C-3PO and R2 together or 4-LOM, Bossk, and IG-88 together as squad choices.

At the moment the game feels very much like Luke and company versus Vader and company, with little real names behind that, unlike IA that's very name balanced. Having a whole named unit could help offset the infantry versus infantry feel.

I wouldnt expect there to be non-generic squads. Named characters are featured more in IA, so I think they will only be used as the commanders. However, since Luke and Vader are listed as "Troopers", there may be an option to have non-commander squad leaders that have 4-5 trooper upgrades.

There are special or elite slot in army composition. I would assume this is the place for named characters or units...

I think it will depend on where FFG takes it, and what you mean.

For now it looks like Vader and Luke are our only existing commander units, and they appear to not directly attach to anything.

So that's probably an indicator.

Suspect we'll get plenty more commander units like that. Possibly a small command element like a commander a couple advisors and a bodyguard or something.

I was wondering how this might work for a group like the Specters (Rebels TV show) or Task Force 99 with Sgt. Kreel as the leader. If you lose a key member how would that affect the squad or do you have to use all of them or just bring a few of them.

Again, a couple options.

Using the spectors as the example..

Option 1: Each member is an Army component. So like Hera and Kanan are both commanders, Sabine and Ezra are fast attack... So on. I think this is a little unlikely as the units would be expensive and have to be pretty beefy to make up thier points, but totally possible.

Option 2: They make up a single unit. So like the spectors make up one Special Forces slot with Kanan as the baseplate model, and each Spector as an upgrade just like adding a special weapon guy to a regular squad. This seems a little more likely.

Option 3: They are upgrades for other units. Say you've got a normal trooper squad, Sabine can replace the squad leader and confer some bonus to the unit as a whole.

Option 4: A hybrid. Certain models will be more or Less stand alone. So like Hera as the Commander. Other models will come in a like group or as upgrades. So like Kanan is Special Forces with Ezra as an upgrade. Others upgrade existing units, like Zeb being an upgrade option for a heavy melee unit.

I think my concern is that IA lets you run (or will eventually let you run) a team of Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewie, but currently Legion doesn't seem to allow for this. As Legion is the big minis wargame experience, this is something I would want outside of the skirmish level experience of IA.

Here's how I would do it:

You can buy a "Rogue One" or "Spectre Team" box. That box would contain about 6 figures (so, Rogue One would be Cassian, Jyn, K2SO, Chirrut, Baze, and Bodhi; Spectre Team would be Kanan, Hera, Ezra, Zeb, Sabine, and Chopper). The box would contain unit cards to run some of the figures as individual Commanders (Cassian, Jyn, Kanan, Hera). It would also contain upgrade cards to add any of the figures as a specialist upgrade to any Special Forces unit. Maybe, as a third option, it would contain a unit card to run all 6 figures as a unique Special Forces unit.

This is completely off topic, but talking about a squad of Rebels characters made me wonder how they would sculpt the minis. Would they go for the more cartoonish look of the show? Or somewhat "realify " the minis to match the live action that we are familiar with for the OT and Rogue One, for example?

If they follow the precedent of X-wing's art or IA's minis, as I'd expect, they'll translate them to a more realistic interpretation.

These seem like they could easily work within Legion, especially Option 2.

This would be awesome. A great way to have all the Spectors on the field and not tied together as a single group/activation I mean it is a warzone, I am sure command would rather put them where they can be more useful rather than have them all together and only being able to use some of their skills at any given time.

I think a Spectors Special forces squad with Hera and Kanan as the base and the others as add on units, maybe an upgrade to add the Commander trait (a commander with some bodyguards basically) and some options to add the rest as upgrades to other squads. I would like that.

I like option 2. Each member beings it own upgrade to help the Special Forces group. Loss Zeb and you loss his special addition to the team.

I also like option 4.

Option 2 works more or less to what I was thinking. The unit would never be designed as one-dimensional, but each figure in the unit would bring some type of utilitarian function.

I'd prefer these units be sold together, though I could see where maybe they are split somehow into smaller packs. Cost for making a unit, of say, five unique models would be more expensive than a unit of generic troop types. Maybe some kind of larger box set product.
