State of the Game(s)?

By Maelora, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, um, what's the haps, peeps?

(Is that modern lingo, I'm not sure, I'm old :( I should probably try to put 'fam' in there somewhere as that seems 'hip' and 'street' but I'm not quite sure what it means...)

Anyway, imagine I've been asleep for, say, nine months, and finally woke up when I was woken by the sound of Phe, um, Absol squeeing at the release of the Mystic book...

I think a lot of the books were delayed? And we sort of got 2nd edition in 'Genysis' or whatever it's called... but then it sort of isn't?

And the failboat dumped its cargo en route from China? (I have a lovely image of mongol horsemen mounted on yaks prodding the containers with spears and later sitting around their campfires in their yurts eagerly rolling up new Engineer characters. And yes, I know mongols probably don't literally ride yaks, but the concept is too awesome for me not to imagine it...)

Um, soooo.... I see some of my favourite people are still around, like 2P51, kaosoe, Donovan, OggDude, whafrog, Desslok and Happy (among others, sorry if I didn't mention you :( ) Is Brad still about? He was very cool.

Anything else I've missed?

Doesn't sound like it. It's just been a long waiting game. Most of the announced books are all still in development. Though the announcement of the Dawn of Rebellion book gives me hope for an Old Republic or a Clone Wars book.

Wow, I'm having Silver Streak flashbacks!

(and no, Gene Wilder blacking up is not as cringe inducing as you might expect)

Hanjin shipping went belly up in February I believe. Literally their entire shipping fleet (and contracted vessels I'm sure) were impounded globally, loaded with cargo, for lack of payment. I have no doubt that threw a colossal wrench in the works. I had read an article where small companies like FFG were absolutely BF-ed by the whole mess.

Genesys isn't what I would call a Gen2 SW game, but there is likely some rules clarifications and options that will port over more or less seamlessly I'd imagine as the dice mechanics are the same more or less. Really looking forward to kicking off a fantasy campaign with it. I haven't playtested any of it (yet) but I have little birds that sing to me....

As always I can never speak details, but I can say stuff is being playtested.

Hey hey hey! I didn't squee THAT Lou--

...okay, maybe a little. But it's exciting, gosh darn it :P !

Other than that, most other people have got it right. A bunch of books were delayed when Hanjin collapsed (utterly ruining the accuracy of my numbers, I'll tell you what), Mongols on yaks playing Bith Engineers is one of the best mental images conjured this week, and most of the cool people are still around :) . Plus I'm still here!

I will also second Mr. Pirate in saying that GeneSys is not really Star Wars ver 2. Can't say more. Oh! That's the other thing! I'm now Mr. Pirate Jr.! Or, uh...Ms. Pirate Jr.? I don't...hmm...

Either way, I can now tease people about knowing things that they don't know :D ! But not nearly as much as he can. Hence the Jr. Or the...wait...what to call it? Never mind, you get it!

So what are you going to do for those books? Record the actual print->ship->store times, but put an * next to them like Barry Bonds?

Pretty much. There's nothing else I can do, aside from omitting them entirely. Which, let's be real here, in not gonna do that :) .

Thanks everyone. Interesting times. And appreciate all the work Absol's put in to crunching the numbers, and you lucky playtester people who get to contribute towards the games we love!

I'm particularly happy that they have announced all but one of the Career books. If they get the last one done, I'm happy with whatever they do in future; at that point the game is completed, and everything else is just gravy.

The games are excellent and deserve a full set of character books. I'm glad they didn't leave it hanging like WHFRP3, the game it was loosely based upon, which ended without us being able to play iconic characters such as elf spellcasters.

If it's any consolation, WHFRP3 is going to be a good source of material for my Genesys fantasy game, in particular the spells. The icons on the spell/prayer cards, minus WHs rules, should port over without much work, at the very least provide the rough basis for spells/prayers in my game.

It's nice to have you back!

You have been missed...

The part of me that just wants to watch the world burn while eating cracker Jacks with rpg playing Mongols had it's day made with these two quotes.

State of the game? Lots of books delayed? Well, you should try to play the german version of the game. Then you can complain ;)

If having your product stock dumped into the Pacific or seized by the Chinese authorities or whatever isn't enough to convince game publishers to move printing to North American and/or European providers, I don't know what will.

I've worked in design for over 15 years and follow production costs. I'm convinced that the cost "savings" in printing in China are an illusion. There are A-to-Z printers in the US and Canada that handle all different scale projects. Ink, paper, and cardboard for covers don't require the investment and rare-earth metals that, say, assembling an iPhone does.

I dropped off the EotE forum (mainly) only because our friendly GM wanted to run 5E D&D Curse of Strahd, all I do is pop on to keep up with the shenanigans, look out for new releases - now IMO VERY slow - or give a bit of advice, usually in the form of veiled sarcasm or humour... or both :D

Whose idea was it for Han Solo to ship RPG Sourcebooks?

Hey even he gets boarded by the Empire sometimes

Exactly why he can't be trusted to ship the sourcebooks.

I'm just gonna throw this out there and if any American or Euro patriots are offended you'll live, but FFG puts out pretty good looking product. Maybe way back when and even still they do solicit samples from other companies and the Chinese ones just do a better job.........just a thought.

There's also a limit to how many products any one printer can actually manufacture - it may be the case that there are Canadian and American printers who can provide quality work at affordable prices, but then every danged publisher in several industries will be interested in using their services, and FFG might be forced to wait quite a while for their projects to be handled by said printers. That's largely speculation, but I have seen companies make comments along those lines in the past.

Really glad you're back, Marcy!

And I haven't seen Brad on here for almost as long as yourself.
