I was thinking about how often on the boards here people have explained that they know players who were holding out on getting into RW "until the elves". Now that Latari are here and will be even more so in about two weeks, have you noticed those players coming back into RW? Have they picked up the Latari core and started playing regularly?
Latari Bringing in Players
i'm not sure if @Wraithist and his group had more friends waiting for elves but i did and they opted out entirely because of Legion /facepalm
i'm hoping to wrangle more people in just because were getting multiple games going on at once finally. Elves/uthuk or not.
I just started runewars and went straight into elves. So far used them once and really happy with them. 2 sets of 3x2 archers with scion front ranks seem to be quite good

Have you proxied hunter's guile? I feel like that will really make them shine.

Did you get the Latari core and Essentials Box to get started? I'm interested if the Essentials Box is that good a deal for new players.
I did essentials and later core. Since the game seems well enough designed to buy one faction and I wanted to watch the budget. I think it looked like a good way to eschew the original core. You get the content without having to pay for models that you might not field.

I've played a couple of times with hunter's guile and have found it to be a bit lackluster. The mortal wound face is nice against characters and heavies, but against most everything else I'd rather have the double blues and tempered steel. With a 4 tray unit giving you 2 rerolls, the likelihood of achieving 3 hits (tempered steel giving you the third) for 6 damage is quite high, and you're not restricted to being in range of overgrown terrain.
One of the builds I've been playing around with is having a 2x2 utility unit with Verdant Sorceress, Rallying Starling and Simultaneous Orders, in between two 6-tray formations which really spit out the hurt each turn.

With two rerolls, BB has 1.75 average hits, and BW has 1.94. BW gets the mortal strike and some morale, and BB has slightly more reliable accuracy and surge results. All in all it's a pretty minor damage upgrade, Especially if say you take Maegan as a figure upgrade and want those surges. Probably only worth while in a 3x2.
I am inclined to agree about hunters guile. I think it would be better served on the Warriors vs the archers. With the Warriors you have the lethal conversion makes the white a 1/3 of getting double dmg? And you still have two other blues, so you have options of which results you end up keeping.
I was just at a game store where someone mentioned waiting for the elves before buying in, and then got pulled by the Legion lure.
I've been giving folks a friendly reminder that Legion isn't out yet, nor is it realistically coming out anytime soon. Are you just not going to game until then?

Ha! I like that. It's true - Legion is or will be a FFG game and is subject to their timeline on production. Early 2018 could mean March or beyond if delayed. I'd plan to do some gaming in the next six months...

Yeah exactly. I believe Runewars was previewed at Gencon 2016 and came out in... April 2017?
Runewars had an aggressive release schedule for FFG, and we are just now catching up the third faction to the others and are about to enter the "second wave". Six months later. SWL might not ever even get a third faction ever, let alone in the first six months.
I'm sure the approval for sculpts, art, card design, and marketing all has to go through the big mouse first as well, causing potential delays that don't exist for an IP that FFG owns.
This time next year if Legion has more than the core set, boosters for the core units, and maybe another commander or two I'd be surprised.

Plus you most likely have to buy 2 cores to field a full list when it does come and even then you have to wait for more expansions that will be who knows how much of your wave 1 stuff/core additions.
I for one plan on getting a box of Legion but when the first wave of expansions come and after trying it from other people who have it.
Latari sold me on the game. Only I didn't wait.

So far no I haven't proxied stuff. The stun from the front rank scion was ok but the tempered upgrade for bonus damage with 3x2 on the archers was great.
I bought 3 army boxes and the essentials box. My only desire from the essentials box which wasn't fulfilled was getting a physical copy of the rules which I was kinda miffed about but other than that I was happy.
My army I'm playing with atm is
Alania with ambush predator. Pack leader spear. ( was really surprised how lethal this was.)
2x 3x2 archers with front line scion. Close quarter targeting and tempered steel
2x3 leonixriders with moment of inspiration.
I do feel if needs something but currently I feel very happy with the punch that this army provides

I love Aliana with Ambush Predator. I've almost wiped an entire Ankaur Maro battery in one charge. Maro had one wound left no matter how I allocated. So close lol. She's super good for dealing with Golems and small units with that spear as it gives the extra 3 damage, then refreshes immediately after that small units quick and inevitable demise.
Not having melee infantry is tough, and I'm actually pretty stoked for the Darnati even though originally I wasn't very impressed. The archers have been super reliable tho.
I just recently used a 2x2 of elf archers with Kari and Hawthorne's ability to reform them to a 4x1 and they did 8 damage EVERY turn. If I had taken Tempered Steel since the Wind Rune turned out not very helpful, I would have done 12 damage every turn... from range. Disgusting.

One of our friends has one box of elves and one core box lol. I'm pretty sure he wants to go for elves, but so far he's 1/3 committed to buying all three armies hahaha. I think he will get more elves in the future. I have some more friends who play but they don't live here unfortunately. Hoping as we get more than three troop options for each army then we'll get some more people in.
We gotta convince your friends that they want Fantasy AND Star Wars.
People here waiting for Legion now. 6 months is not a lot for wargamers, they just keep playing their old stuff until then.
This game is going to look really different in a couple months when all sides have infantry + ranged + cavalry plus all the new neutral upgrade cards coming out (like column tactics). AND you'll have to figure out how to play against 3 different factions. The lists are going to change up drastically.
The playing against 3 factions (soon 4) is big enough as it is.
As i've mentioned in other threads this game has a soft rock-paper-scissors effect. I say soft because its very noticable that one faction tends to beat the snot out of another, but its not 1sided in the slightest just a bit more in their favor.
But that may shift a lot once we get new toys. Especially once Daqans get our scouts

Yeah I think a bit of that soft rock paper scissors is the lack of ranged for Daqan, cavalry for Waiqar etc.. Having access to all the types will switch it up a bit. Also the elves having a command unit so they have the option of some additional bane removal will help them vs Waiqar etc.
It will be interesting to see the lists that develop that have to be able to handle all the cases. I doubt you can one-trick pony this game.

Once all factions are equal this isnt going to be rock paper scissors. Its going to be rock paper scissors lizard Spock.
