Half Points, big ships and named pilots only?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

So this is just me thinking outloud, but what if FFG changed MOV for Half points, to named Pilots and Big ships only.

I think we would see a lot more generics and take the game back to a place, where is once was. This handles the entire discussion of how many shields and hull a ship should have to count as half. Since only named pilots and Big ship earn half points. This always boosts all generics instantly.

I love this idea, was wondering what others thought?

No, the problem with generics is that we have a highest possible PS meta and they usually do not have high PS. Sure some generics are overcosted but others aren't.

I don't tend to see small-based generics on 'half health' - they tend to either survive (if I win) or get finished off. Unlike a token laden ace or large ship, lasting out a game on a handful of hit points left doesn't tend to work.

Getting half points for an ace would be nice, I admit. There are a distressing number of small based ships as tough as any large based ships (Nym, Norra Wexley and Miranda Doni come to mind) but a possible problem is how to make 'half points' work for ships which regenerate shields. Yes, technically a scum large ship could Gonk its way back above half health but it's incredibly awkward and action-intensive to actually do, whilst it's not uncommon for Norra or Miranda to make you chew through their full shield value twice if the other player manages to outfly you.

At the same time; broadly, I agree; using Large ships and uniques is a nice way of splitting up the pack rather than large ships and ships above 35 points, or whatever. Yes, it means getting 2 hits off Wampa might give you 7 points for him, but that's not the end of the world, and certainly getting 2 hits off Soontir Fel should be worth at least as much as getting 5 hits off a generic Omicron Group Pilot.

I don't really get the need for it. Large base ships have half point rules because they tend to be tankier, or at least more powerful, than most small base ships (or used to be, at least). The few small base ships that have higher hit points are offset by the fact that they usually only have 1Agi and are still relatively pricey, so it's not hard to land hits on them.
Putting half-point rules on any small base ship, even named ones, would completely remove some ships from the game, where it would overly promote others. Fenn Rau and Soontir Fel? They're unusual enough these days with the sheer number of bombs, but they'd surely be gone forever if you could score half points on a 30-odd point ship by catching them with a single bomb, or having a risky maneuver over a debris turn up a Direct Hit. All incentive to run glass cannons, or even a cheap named pilot like Wampa, Inaldra, or Cracken, disappears when you could just put in a similarly survivable generic, and protect your points. That becomes a race to the bottom real fast.

I genuinely can't think of a single problem ship across the entire game that would be better balanced due to a half point rule on their named pilots, but I can think of a dozen pilots - and a few ships - that'd never see the table again.

Maybe take the rule from large ships only to just unique ships and ships with unique titles?

"Named Pilots and Big ships only. handles that"

Why? If your willing to take a named pilot, losing him should have some effect on your squad. Half points just makes sense. Fenn Rau and Soontier are affected, no question their, but shouldn't they be?

Why? Why not? If you want to penalize the point hoggs let the generic ships skate by without that additional half point penalty.

Maybe you didn't read my post correctly because your English may need some work. I'm saying that if you are going to make all the uniquely piloted ships worth half points I'm saying you can cut out making ALL large ships award half points as well. This may now mean that one of each class of large ship could be used without awarding half the points which will give you a lot more reason to use one of them instead of spending a few more points for a named ship and the PS increase it bring. Of course some of the unique titles for ships are pretty good and could be used on a generic ship so we'll just include those as well.
