Really good missions

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing

Okay - I've got quite a few people at our local store interested in trying missions.

I've played through the Force Awakens missions with them, and am moving on to a few scenarios from other expansions (Preystalker, Bounty Hunt, Payback).

There is also Mission Control, however, which has no less than 85 pages of missions.

Any other really good scenarios people have come across? Any suggestions for such games?

Well there's the cinematic missions in the Epic ship sets for a start. Escape from Hoth? Don't mind if I do...

Good point. I don't have any of the epic ships, but quite a few of my friends do.

If you want an overview and where they come from to track down......

Lacks the setup images, from the looks of it; are they on 3x3 boards?

Otherwise will probably give them a try.

All of the escape from Hoth missions are 3x3.

I forget about the gozanti ones, but the first gozanti is 3x3.

The really big ships use 6x3 some of the time as does the c-roc campaign

The Gozanti ones are all 3 x 3 - the carrier is the only epic ship I own (because more TIE fighters)

How many players do you have, typically, for the missions you have already played? Are you looking for something that plays quickly (1-3 hrs) or is there interest in playing longer (4, 6, 8 hrs)?

Political Escort, from the original core set, has stood the test of time.

Analogues to a normal game - 1-2 hours - because we have a regular games evening.

I do like political escort, but personally prefer Rescue - the Force Awakens version of same - it's pretty similar in it's basic premise, but the fact that the Squadmate can actually shoot back occasionally and the fact that you can't just deploy formed up around it means the defender has a few choices to make.

I have intention of going back and doing more of the cinematic campaigns with the huge ships.

I managed to get a day off this past summer and played through the C-ROC campaign. 8 hours later and boy that was tiring but fun! That campaign was really good and I wound up flying a bunch of things I haven't used in forever - z95 (even better a z95 with a hot shot blaster), Awing, scyks... And then of course other fun things like the t70.

I need to play it the other way now, so I can fly my TIEs along the scum ships.

Have you considered Heroes of the Aturi Cluster? Campaign based, cooperative play using an AI mechanic for the Imperial forces.

We're currently going through the old FFG missions and are finding some of the first ones (started with the transport) to be less than balanced as we keep the ship selections to those particular Waves of ships. Anyway, I looked these over and downloaded them; they look like fun!

Thanks for the link!

Have you checked out the Shuttle Tyderium podcast? Those fine folks review most of the missions that come out, and babaganoosh makes some sweet missions on mission control too. Plus, you don't need any of the new ships to play mission control things because they aren't in there! Its a feature!

Look for anything by Babaganoosh on Mission Control. Some are better than others, but he's pretty good.

I'll second that recommendation for checking out the fine folks on The Shuttle Tydirium podcast. ;)

Some time ago, the podcast ran a series of 5 episodes that discussed the HotAC campaign - its missions, mechanics and pilot progression system - and interviewed the creator, Josh Derksen. Episodes #9-12 and #18. Check them out at https://shuttletydirium.podbean.com

Agree with Chadwick. Ive played "honor among thievs" several times. It always goes down to the wire. Its perfect with three people. If you have 4 people just put 2 people on the imperial team. If 6 people just put 2 on each faction.

That was actually discussed with the guys last night. Probably going to try starting it soon. Fortunately, I own umpty-ump TIE fighters, so I've got the Imperial part of the game covered...

Glad you enjoyed it!

The FFG missions are usually fun - depending on how hard you're trying to play them. For a variety of reasons, those missions have become more breakable. Same goes for a lot of my missions on mission control. It's hard to future-proof missions against product releases. But if you are playing casually, I'd say that any of FFG's or my missions are going to be fun plays.

Political escort is a good start, and the mission from the Imperial Veterans expansion is also a lot of fun - I'd suggest giving those a shot.

And, for a great RPG-esque co-op game, you really can't beat HotAC. It's definitely worth a shot!

I'm sort of amazed it took several posts before Heroes was mentioned / linked. It has a very active community (they have their own FB group) and plenty of fan-made expansions to the fan-made expansion. :) We're on our third crew at our local game store. Once you finish Heroes there is another campaign called the Battlestar Pallas that carries on using the Heroes concepts (and terrain).

Same here. It's also great for new players, being able to discuss formations and attack Patterns with squadmates eases into the game nicely (and allows everyone some RP,for those who are really getting into it).

As for PvP-Missions, the Gozanti Campaign is actually quite fun, providing some nice unique Scenarios getting a lot out of the universe.
