And I find it interesting the person who raised it had an avatar only days old and apparently created it to post in this thread, hmmmmmmmmmm........and hasn't posted again....hmmm

And here's someone actually insinuating something instead of outright stating it.

Have I been caught? Do they know?!?!

Nope, the X-card is a legit thing : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SB0jsx34bWHZWbnNIVVuMjhDkrdFGo1_hSC2BWPlI3A/edit

I didn't come up with it, and in fact I just came across it earlier this year, after all this time. Used to be it was me and a bunch of sweaty boy nerds playing in my parents' basement, but this hobby has evolved so much in the past 30 years and now brings in all kinds of people. While I might never understand what it is to be like another person, I can respect that we can be different and still game together and have a great time. I hope that by sharing this more gamers feel safe in playing. Of course I am the first to encourage people to play how they like at their tables, and I wouldn't easily step in to tell someone they're doing it wrong if everyone in their game is having fun.

Well, that's one more mechanic I'll freely ignore in my games.

As is your right. I appreciate you taking the time to let us all know, too, in my reply to Maelora.

For me, as I foray back into public gaming I intend to keep it on hand. It's trivial for me to draw an X on an index card and tell people how to use it. I intend to forge new friendships with public play and find people who will eventually form the core of my new "home group," where the real magic will happen. I presume I won't need it there as these will be people I know well enough to avoid problems.

OMG I can't stand it. Whatever happened to:

  • a) respect for differences
  • b) open clear dialogue when your differences haven't been respected

? Surely those are all the tools you need. Instead people have to rely on props to get them through a social encounter? WeeeaaaaK.

My friend, I wish those rules were respected at every table but it has come to my attention that they are not. Long gone are the days when we could just observe Wyld Stallyons* rules. Putting a card on the table says flat out that those considerations will be in play, because anyone spending a little time reading rpg forums will easily find examples of when they were not. Used to be you didn't have to tell people to put their trash in a trash can, either.

* Wyld Stallyns rules:

1. Be Excellent to each other

2. Party on, Dudes! (dudes being the gender/species neutral form, as was intended.)

how dare I misspell Stallyns

Whatever happened to good ol fashioned arguing and telling people to F off? Used to be called freedom. Now I get a card??

So if I pick the card up, eat it, and say nothing, is there a follow up guideline?................

Eating it roughly translates to an unspoken request to eat the NPC that the group is interacting with.

I've told the guy with a gun to your head to STAND DOWN. And for what it's worth, I am not the sort to take easy offense. However, not everyone in the world is like me. I'm plenty fine finishing my whiskey and giving someone The Look while they refactor what it is they really want to do.

Mock all you want gang, but there's a reason this card exists. For those that haven't had the displeasure of dealing with the issues this card prevents, how very nice for you!

Can we officially call this topic 6 by now? It has been quite the debate on these X-Cards.

Deal with what? Life? Reality? The world? What happens when everyone starts putting down cards for everything they don't want to deal with? We want to formalize not dealing with things and that is good how? Talk less about differences of opinions? Not only is this a rotten idea it very well may be one of the single worse ideas I have ever read.

What about those that have had such interactions but have chosen to deal with them without using a prop?

That's the rub, isn't it? I don't think it should be taken to the extreme you propose, but if you're say, portraying an incestuous relationship, it stands to reason that someone could have a problem with that. That's pretty legit, and I don't feel like someone needs to explain to me why. Now, if they're throwing it down because they don't like the divergence from canon, well that's another story entirely.

How would you know? You can't ask them? That's why it's a ******* terrible idea.
