As a Casual, I Can't Read the Forums Anymore

<sigh> Can't we just go one thread without someone complaining about how someone else complained that people complain too much?

Oh no! I'm part of the problem!!

The predominant themes of the X-Wing forum seem to be:

○ _____ ship is broken.

○ _____ ship is unplayable.

○ _____ ship is stupid (hate the mouse).

○ _____ faction is too strong.

○ _____ faction is too weak.

○ _____ should be errata'd.

○ Seriously, we love errata talk.

○ _____ is DOA.

○ Is the game dying/dead/2.0-ready?

As a guy who plays a few times a month at home- trying out a bit of everything, with like-minded players- I come here to see what interesting combos are available to ships, what new synergy has arisen, how to load out an odd ship I don't have much experience with... and all I see is hate and suffering.

Now I have played enough games competitively to understand the irritation that comes from facing the same overwhelming and un-fun strategies every week... but there's a game beneath that layer of competitive play, and coming here you wouldn't think anyone was enjoying it anymore.

I used to visit this forum daily. Now it's about once a week. It just seems like there's nothing for me- a casual player who still loves the game- in this place. Is the general discussion area not the right place for a guy like me? Are the contentious topics just too hot for anything else to stay on the front page? Is this community really as jaded as it seems?

Now I love tournaments, I love HotAC, I love OT/limited/mystery box events, playing silly lists at home and talking about my fun hobby with other like minded individuals but when I start to get grief for not playing how SOMEONE ELSE WANTS ME TO, either here or IRL, it starts to become not fun. When it becomes not fun is when I walk away.

Here has become very not fun. I stated a fun thread earlier this year because I didn't want to moan about moaners so I thought; let's have a laugh! Unfortunately; it took 4 comments for the ******* to start and a well know podcaster turned up with his sock puppet account to troll as well. I get it Dee; you're disillusioned but please stop spreading it about for no reason other than attention. Don't tread on others fun because you're not having any.

@saturnflight; I play competitively at tournaments, I play HotAC, I play silly lists on my kitchen table and I play Epic. I love playing X-Wing but it feels like this forum and the standard format are being dragged down by an echo chamber mindset of negativity.

You sound a lot like myself in where I'm at. I actually enjoy flying some of what is now considered "meta list". Some of it was Homebrew concoction developed independent of tourneys, some of it is an intentional variation of a known meta list. But then for other games, there's other good stuff like epic (both battles and the campaign missions), HotAC, and just plain trying fun ships or ideas.

I've seen that negativity in many places... My trick is that at a store event, all bets are off and what I use is what I want. For everything else, I just have different circles of friends and I know some will want bleeding edge of the power curve and others want jank. Try it all and have a blast with it all. That's been how I handle it and generally avoid some if the being told what to fly or not fly.

I hope your events get better, being able to use what you like without putting up with the crap.

I'm sure looking forward to the new Rebels season airing, that thread tends to be fun with new episodes.

True. After that though..? D:

I'll agree that I've been coming fewer and fewer times per week when I used to live on this forum. There has been less and less of interest to actually read for a while now.

New job blocks the page and that doesn't help.

Same, man. There's just nothing here that's worth engaging these days.

Give it 3 more weeks and the rebels thread will rise from the ashes.

Forces of destiny thread? :P:wacko:

im sure we'll have a last Jedi thread pop up and then... whatever new show is coming. Hopefully something good.

There is a problem here. Perhaps us casual lot need a Gunboat style thread to keep at the top?

I think, sadly, that this has evolved more into a competetive game than a casual one and that’s what we are seeing. Keep posting casual threads and hopefully more people will show interest,

Have got some interest in a regular scenarios evening at our local game night - will try to keep putting up 'evenings of missions' reports.

I'm hoping to try the excellent looking 3:10 to Yavin next.

The only things that makes me interested in the forum right now, are topics on news. And that's sad.

Seriously, X-Wing community beated 40k community right now. And there's nothing much else to say.

Thank you for retracting that rather juvenile post!

The squad list and bat rep boards are pretty cool, they’re what keeps me around.

Gosh can you imagine the salt when the next series is set in the sequel era, considering the fit people had over Rebels in the beginning?

Yup. So much so that it's taken me this long to come on here and realise I was tagged in something. :P

Though tbh that's got as much to do with having completely fallen out of love with the game recently and having no money to buy newer stuffs to keep up with everyone else. Roll on Gunboat day so I can just fly 4 of them with no care about getting tabled because I'll finally have Gunboats! :D

And overnight, the tone of the forum changes yet again... It's looking better here the past few days since this post was made.

I think so too, we just need to realize that competitive and casual play can co-exist. We are all just humans who want to play with plastic space ships in the end.

It’s going to be a sequel to the Ewoks 80s cartoon, set post RotJ and being the ‘Endor Haulocaust’ into canon. The Ewoks must survive post apocalyptic destruction of their homeworld thanks to the debris from the DS causing a nuclear winter and changing the environment for centuries to come. The Ewoks must band together to save as much of their moon’s life and culture as they can while bumming rides from any starships that happen along the way. Refugees being turned away from planet after planet, a rag tag band searching for a new home.

or its gonna be the story of Luke founding the Jedi and Ben Solo takes on an Anakin CW role where we can actually like him as a hero.

One of the two. I’m betting on the Ewoks

It just takes people posting constructive threads instead of threads complaining about all the negative threads.

Not rocket science.

It takes people posting those threads, and others to continue posting in them to keep them relevant. It may not be rocket science, but it's nice to see the change.

The X-Wing community has some happy people and some sad people.

The sad people post sad threads.

The happy people post sad threads about there being sad people.

When the happy people post happy threads instead, it brings balance to the force.

Complaining about the forums is like complaining about your dice, you have a ton of control over the results you would prefer to see.

If you sit around just reading and getting all grumpy......do something.....about....it.........and post what you want to read.

Just complaining about all the complaining is a self fullfilling endless loop of doom.

All yall are on this forum constantly, dont act like you dont have the time.

Contribute to a thread you like or better yet start one with more than just a question.

Also feel free to **** post to!

Its competely fine to talk about pancakes for no reason. Thats part of the xwing community to.

If we cant be goofy together and post stupid jokes and other nonsense like star wars gifs this forum would be soulless.

@Celestial Lizards and @Thormind are doing some good work making quality topics - focus on that...
Respectively:

Personally, I'd love to have more of the "What would you do..?" threads, with graphs and Vassal screen-shots. If I had more time or played Vassal, the forums would be flooded with them..

Pro Tip: Im gonna hazard a guess that 75% of the people that come here All Definitely Have Time for that kind of thing.

Its just easier to drunk vent about dice and competitive lists.
