Many local areas have their own Facebook group for Xwing. I visit the forums mostly to see squad lists, but every once in a while I'll feel brave and check the main forums. Sadly no matter the topic, there is a lot of negative posts.
As a Casual, I Can't Read the Forums Anymore
18 hours ago, GreenDragoon said:as someone who started to post more and more in recent months: the last 2-3 weeks were a bit strange and void of interesting threads, as if something changed after NOVA. Maybe it was the double preview on wave 12 and 13 within such short time, maybe the competitive season is over?
I would stear clear of the main forum for now, maybe visit the squad building and painting/mods subforums.
As far as I'm concerned:
The nationals thread was interesting for some time. The one on imps being wiped out is just wrong, so I should have stayed clear of that one. Netlisting is an interesting topic, but so far the opinions are "I don't and it's stupid" versus "I do and you have no right to judge". I should have stayed out of that one, too. And the rotation thread is interesting to discuss, but has no point in the end. There too I should have stayed out.
@Timathius had some great insight into the marketing. But I didn't, so should not have posted. So with that realization I will lurk a bit more and post a bit less to not make the problem worse myself.
Dude, don't let the negativity keep you from posting. Your charts and graphs were awesome the other day. ******* Box and Whisker charts... hadn't seen those in a while. Just be positive and be awesome to one another
The main problem I have had in the last few weeks is people attacking others for how they enjoy the game. It has been extremely toxic, people should not be shamed for the way they enjoy their free time. People said that my words in other threads were too strong when describing the way that certainly people on this forum talk about others. Here is a thread about why that is not true. We as a community need to stop treating others so poorly within the community over things so petty as where they got their idea for a list, whether they like to play competitively or for fun or the ships they like to fly. Instead lets save that kind of vitriol for actual problem people in the community like the bullies, the players who take advantage of new players, cheaters, misogynists and just assholes.

I'm really not so sure about the status of this thread.......but I really don't like malls, that's for certain.
When I have a game planned for the weekend, I come here to soak in ideas and discussion that might inspire a squad. I hope to find people talking about what roles ships fill, which cards have reinvigorated an old pilot, and how a new ship is performing. And I find myself stuck choosing between data with little discussion (list builds- usually competitive minded) or vitriolic discussions constantly verging off into hate for the game and hate for the license. Rather than feeling inspired, I come away feeling depressed.
Now someone has directed I look closer in list building, and I'm finding there's some theorycrafting there that might be what I'm looking for, but the big warning I'm trying to put out there is, if this is how a long-term (but casual) player feels coming to this forum, how will a new player feel?

Wow.....I read these forums and interject here and there and I've read some real planted opinions and passionate debates, but I've never actually felt the way you have about posts on this forum to date, regardless the apparent opposing views on any given subject. Perhaps my perspective is a bit more laid back as I scan the texts as this is simply a game, or I've missed such vitriol due to some inability to comprehend any of the violent emotional attacks in font; either way, I'm thankful for my deficiency.

Also, why is everyone talking about going to the mall to buy cookies? That's what grocery stores are for.
I have lost sight of the analogy... what's a 'grocery store'?

I can certainly understand wanting to avoid negative posts, but I think part of the problem is that a lot of the stuff you mentioned just doesn't generate discussion as much. For most ships, their role probably isn't heavily disputed. When new cards are released, how long will people discuss the impact before most of it's been covered? Contrast with opinions, which everyone has and not everyone agrees on, and you can see why such posts get a lot more replies and a lot more heated. Some people do go a bit far, but others are just having fun disagreeing with each other.

Hm...gaming blogs that occasionally mention X-Wing, among many other games? I'm pretty sure notes from the developers are the cookie factory, with the roads and delivery trucks being the Internet itself, but someone should really start charting this all out.
At least we can all agree about clothing stores being toxic environments.

Case in point: Hot Topic applies to both.

As a guy who plays a few times a month at home- trying out a bit of everything, with like-minded players- I come here to see what interesting combos are available to ships, what new synergy has arisen, how to load out an odd ship I don't have much experience with... and all I see is hate and suffering.
Now I have played enough games competitively to understand the irritation that comes from facing the same overwhelming and un-fun strategies every week... but there's a game beneath that layer of competitive play, and coming here you wouldn't think anyone was enjoying it anymore.
I used to visit this forum daily. Now it's about once a week. It just seems like there's nothing for me- a casual player who still loves the game- in this place. Is the general discussion area not the right place for a guy like me? Are the contentious topics just too hot for anything else to stay on the front page? Is this community really as jaded as it seems?
Amen.
Seriously, I do the same. (Fly casual) A whole lot more fun.

What about department stores? They sell clothing, but they have lots of other stuff, too. During the holiday season, you can usually even find tins of cookies or whatnot as gifts.

Based on the one psychology class I took, I believe the talk of mall cookies was a Freudian slip that indicates a hidden desire for cookies.

I strongly encourage that you look up heroes of the aturi cluster. I felt much the same way that you do a little over a year ago and shifting gears from competitive to co-op revitalized not only my love for the game and the system that underlies it, but it awakened in me and my playgroup a strong desire to innovate within and beyond the confines of the game system in ways I never would have imagined had I only stayed playing competitively. Me and the group I play with are now going on over a year playing our campaign every weekend and X-wing has never been more fun for any of us than it is when we come together to play hotac.

I can understand people wanting the game to be better, but it certainly sounds like almost nobody on here is content with the game that's been provided and it does irritate me.

But, it's generally only good to go in you're looking at lists.
The painting/customs sub is decent as well.
Threads like the one linked is why I came here too. I love the game but hardly ever get to play, so I like to read about other peoples thoughts and experiences. The list building sub is good as people are there purely to discuss ideas on playing the game, and the painting/customs sub is always fun to look at.
@saturnflight is totally spot on about the main forum, and I am pretty tired of seeing the same discussions over and over. However, who am I to say what people should be posting? (especially as I rarely post myself)
I just find it frustrating that posts that I find interesting about X-Wing (discussing tactics etc) are buried by the sheer amount of posts about 'fixing' the game.
And there is a lot of negativity in the main forum. I recently posted in a discussion started by someone else about an NPE I had playing Dengar, and another forum user posted about how horrible and negative the thread was (not my post in particular, the whole thread), this got me to I wondering if the negativity in the forum had got to me as well, or if people are that sick of of it that they are starting to see it everywhere.

I've noticed the same things but I still enjoy coming here. I play with a few friends at home 1-2 times a week. I still get good advice and input here.

<sigh> Can't we just go one thread without someone complaining about how someone else complained that people complain too much?
I'm a pure casual player, but I enjoy a good debate. There are those that revel in the misery of their complaints, but they tend to be a one track record, unable to vary ther argument or appreciate alternatives. They exist everywhere in life, but the internet gives them free rein.
I enjoy the forum, personally, as there are all sorts here. Just don't let the energy vampires suck you dry...
