As a Casual, I Can't Read the Forums Anymore

A Blaster Turret meta? Wow... that’s like an alternate universe based solely on Wave III! I wish my local store was like that! (I almost only ever play TIE Bombers!)

I'm still pushing for Tomax+ LWF+ Unguided Rockets+ Adrenaline Rush. Play Faux Defender!

... it's stupid(ly fun)!

I'm sure looking forward to the new Rebels season airing, that thread tends to be fun with new episodes.

Now I have played enough games competitively to understand the irritation that comes from facing the same overwhelming and un-fun strategies every week... but there's a game beneath that layer of competitive play, and coming here you wouldn't think anyone was enjoying it anymore.

Couldn't agree more.

I too used to visit this forum much more than I do now because the topics just dont interest me when they're all centered on the competitive aspect (although I do play competitively as well), however I feel there are reasons why this came to be.

When I first came to this forum a few years back, I had 9 friends on here that we're casual players and would visit everyday. Eight of this friends haven't visited this forum in almost a year now. Guys like Darthmeanie will post casual/epic topics still but they fall off the front page quickly. There just isn't enough casual players to keep the topics relevant. Why? I think FFG has alot to do with it. When I first bought this game, to me at least it was advertised as a simple cool game to pickup and play with your friend. Now with all the releases out it's added alot of complexity to the game, which attracts competitive players and turns off people looking for a more casual pick up and play game. Also I think alot of casual players were originally attracted by the more iconic ships, which alot could use some help now. The competitive meta affects even those who just go to their lgs looking for a friendly game or two. Until more official support for casual (new simplified gameplay, mission book, etc) the forums will be lopsided towards competitive players and topics such as fixes to bring in a more diverse meta.

As for "jaded" players posting negative topics, I think alot of them are our fellow casual player, trying to release some of the frustrations I listed above.

Note: I love both competitive and casual aspects of this game.

Thanks. I really do my best to put up some of the content I would like to see from others. Not "this ship is broken--FFG must fix now!!" but rather trying to have fun within the elements of the game. I see so much creativity out here (like this from @RufusDaMan: https://imgur.com/a/pN4Aq), but it is surrounded by people bemoaning a ship they personally think would somehow ruin the game. Anything, done right, just makes this game more fun and diverse even if it doesn't crack the tournament scene wide open.

Been on vacation for a week. While all of the titles were different, the basic content was still all the same: XWM needs fixed, and I've got the answer right here!

I dont understand the complaints. Its not like the topics are "Let's discuss round 0 placement strategies" then you click on it and someone is complaining about Dengar being OP. They are usually titled something like "FFG can we please nerf the jumpmaster already."

It's like walking through a mall to get to Mrs. Fields Cookies and complaining about all the clothing stores. Just dont walk in.

Simply dont read the fix/nerf/hate threads. They are easy to avoid.

Hate for net listing???

So close to wiping Imps out of game!

Does X-wing need a rotation?

What if we doubled all ship stats.

Not exactly difficult to detect. After that you can weed through the Nostradamus threads (aka predict this card, or this ship, or what will this ability be). They dont provide any valuable information, but can be fun to dilly dally in and post your thoughts, but ultimately, just a waste a time.

Then you have your advertisement threads for Podcasts, or custom cards, etc. to skip if thats not your thing.

After that you have narrowed down your threads to gander in that may have information you want.

In the end, if the forum doesnt have a topic you are interested in, click that Start New Topic button.

While you are correct that there are many threads whose title gives away the salt contained within, I find that there's a significant number of discussion that ends up bleeding into other threads.

Well, I think the complaint is that there is not much to read that isn't one (irony duly noted).

Furthermore, topics like "Does X-Wing Need a Rotation" pose interesting ideas to help out with the long-term survival of the game, so I think they have some validity.

"Hate for Netlisting" is a personal query, so I would let that slide.

"Wiping Imps" is just troll-baiting, and "Doubling Ship Stats" goes back to "the game is broken and I know how to fix it" so yeah, that's the garbage we are talking about.

OTOH, the Start New Topic button is a great idea for adding good content. ;)

The complaint is not that clothing stores exist when I want the food court. The complaint is that the food court has slowly been closing down, and as stores close they're replaced by more clothig, until there is nothing for me at the mall. And if there were other malls I'd go there, but this is the only one, and it just seems like in the midst of clothing stores (complaints) there should be a few cookie shops (positive and engaging discussion) too.

Typed a defense rather than voice-to-texting my thoughts. Hopefully more coherent.

I do find that there is a problem with so called corruption of conversations. Anytime a new ship is revealed from any new media, the thread pretty quickly becomes predominantly about how terrible Disney is doing with ships.

You mean this type of contribution isn't helpful?

The player I'm talking about is a hyper-aggressive Wishbone fanatic that hates how costly turrets are. Then he discovered Kavil and Attani :D

We usually butt heads extremely up close, and let each other eat focus fire. He absolutely dispises Captain Oicunn, because he can never seem to quite stay clear of him.

Also, it seems whenever he fires that darn turret, the dice god smiles upon him. I believe with a choice like that, he deserves it- were it not for the fact that Winged Gundark throwing blanks seems to be my spirit animal lately.

Wait....like....

The cookie stand isn't part of the food court.

Ugh. I'm really old.

The BatReps subforum is great. I would love to post there, myself, but I've gotten out of the habit of keeping track of even the few games I do manage to get in a month. I would love to see that subforum explode with new threads.

There's always the Gunboat thread! Things are pretty happy over there right now. :)

I've noticed the same. Which I think is unfair to Disney. No one can meet everybody's expectations when we set the bar so high.

I have actually liked the new ship designs. I know I originally badmouthed the lack of creativity during episode 7, however i now get what had to happen since they were effectively relaunching a franchise. In any case, they more than made up for it with Rogue One. And I really like the Tie Silencer so far.

You can always open your own cookie stand if you want, and there's several other malls.

But it's fair to point out that this place is just ridiculous these days.

Sometimes you're looking for cookie stands because you know you don't have the knowledge or the time to make good cookies yourself...

I used to visit this forum daily. Now it's about once a week. It just seems like there's nothing for me- a casual player who still loves the game- in this place. Is the general discussion area not the right place for a guy like me? Are the contentious topics just too hot for anything else to stay on the front page? Is this community really as jaded as it seems?

Pretty much all online gaming communities tend to have a small vocal group of complainers. If things were really bad you would see a lot more toxicity. Even reasonably decent games tend to have people who think the game is being designed as a personal insult to their mothers.

As I said, I follow a lot of gaming groups, and am extremely active in HCRealms, a group for HeroClix. I am used to vocal minorities and negativity. But I just don't see anything else here.

AAAAAAAAANND breathe. I nearly had a full on rant but have reigned it in. X-Wing is a fun game, right?

I have to say; I'm finding it's not just the forum these days. The last standard tournament I went to I got jip for winning with a meta list. See, I REALLY ENJOY playing Fenn, Dengar and Inaldra. @Stevey86 will attest to the fact that I was playing with mindlink from day 1 of release when it was written off as a dud and DOA because I didn't listen to the internet and wanted to show it's potential. I think I did this locally and better (more interested, Bruce) players showed the internet this at high level events. However, I'm apparently "just out to win" and "running filth" by using a card I love to use. It's a tournament; if I spend an over an hour sat in traffic to get there and pay entry fee I may just WANT to go home with something more than I could have got for playing on my kitchen table. If bringing competitive lists to competitive events is "bad"; we have no hope.

Now I'm in 2 minds about this particular event as the owner of the LGS has caused me a lot of personal problems so I don't know if he perhaps jaded the other players opinion of me before I turned up (seems they all had brekkie together) so I'm hoping this was a one off. I had nothing but good times this SC season so I'll see how it goes moving forwards.

Now I love tournaments, I love HotAC, I love OT/limited/mystery box events, playing silly lists at home and talking about my fun hobby with other like minded individuals but when I start to get grief for not playing how SOMEONE ELSE WANTS ME TO, either here or IRL, it starts to become not fun. When it becomes not fun is when I walk away.

Here has become very not fun. I stated a fun thread earlier this year because I didn't want to moan about moaners so I thought; let's have a laugh! Unfortunately; it took 4 comments for the ******* to start and a well know podcaster turned up with his sock puppet account to troll as well. I get it Dee; you're disillusioned but please stop spreading it about for no reason other than attention. Don't tread on others fun because you're not having any.

@saturnflight; I play competitively at tournaments, I play HotAC, I play silly lists on my kitchen table and I play Epic. I love playing X-Wing but it feels like this forum and the standard format are being dragged down by an echo chamber mindset of negativity.
