What to buy when new

Everywhere i hear you have to have more then 1 set of the 2 player starter decks or can I just buy that one and play ?

You'll be 12 cards short of two thirty card decks for standard play with a single starter. You can get a second starter, which will allow you to play elite versions of the characters as well as build 30 card decks, or you can elect to get the extra cards through booster packs, original starters or on a card by card basis through the secondary market. Realize that just getting enough cards to build a deck is not the same as designing and acquiring a tournament competitive deck, but the game can be fun in a casual way with the starter cards. Also, if you just want to try the game it can be played with 24 card decks and less than 30 points of characters, so one starter set can give you a taste.

The 2 player starter decks will have enough cards to play a game for 2.

But you are not getting a standard 30-card play deck for each player (20 cards each). This means you will have to buy some boosters or another starter set if you want to build standard 30-card decks for each player. Also, you are only getting one copy of each card from the starter. When you start to get into deck building, you will likely want to get a second copy of cards that work well to include them in your deck, as well as making certain of your heroes or villains elite so they can use two dice. I do think the 2 player starter gives you good value more than the previous starters. It contains some really strong cards.

Even though you can play against a friend with the starter deck they are not full decks and therefore do not give you the whole Destiny experience. Buying two of the starters gives you access to 4 character elites that are mostly strong (Kylo/Phasma more than Rey/Poe).

You also get 2 copies of all the event/support cards in the deck which is the only place you can find most of them (some reprints from earlier sets in it to).

Bang for your buck they give you great value and if you want to just play Villain go halves with a friend who wants Heroes or sell the other half of the set.

It all comes down to what you want to do with the game. In my mind, this comes down to:

A. "Board Game Experience" - Just buy 1 2-player starter and play whenever you fee like it. The decks are pretty well balanced and you'll get the general mechanics of the game down. Done.

B. "Board Game Experience 2.0" - If you like the first option and want more, I would move to B and get a second 2-player set. Then you can get to the full 30-card deck, play with 2-dice characters and get into some optimization of decks for both the hero and villain decks. You'll have a little bit more than you can use for each 30-card deck, but can experiment to see what works best for you.

C. "Toe Dip" to "All in" - After that, the next step is to see the rest of the SWD world. You can buy the original Intro Decks to get a little more of that "Board Game Experience" vibe. Or go all in and start buying boosters. The last step is where addiction truly sets in. :)

I do think that the 2-player kit is the best starting point though. The Intro Decks were okay...but not really all that balanced. The 2-player decks are more so (although I personally see the villains winning more still, especially after the 2.0 mode, but maybe that's just me). Either way, good luck! It is a fun game and (now with supply issues seemingly a thing of the past), here's hoping it picks up again. My area is kind of barebones at the moment - hoping that will change!

I always buy two of each starter. Lat year if you wanted elite Finn you needed two Rey starters. Same thing to get a set of Force Throw and Mind Probe as there was only 1 per starter. I also got two of the new starter game so I can run the characters at elite and have a playset of all the new cards.

Online vendors that sell opened single cards and dice. Coolstuffinc, MiniatureMarket, and eBay are some of the big ones, but there are numerous other sources around.

Sadly the two player starter is an incomplete product. They sell you half the game to keep the price point down. Many people have mixed feeling about this but at this point, try the game out with what you have and if you like it buy the second starter to complete that product. Learn the game a bit more and buy the singles you are interested in. Buying just packs of cards will give you many many cards you'll never play with.
