Collecting cards and buying booster boxes/packs

By Maim Voorhees, in Star Wars: Destiny

What is the best way to collect sets? Buy many boosters or is there a safe way to trade? Or is it even worth trying to collect them all? Thanks for the help.

Anyone?

Buy 3 booster boxes. This generally gives you all commons. all uncommons, 90% of all rares and 18 legendary cards.

Trade duplicate legendary for other legendary to get a better mix, do the same for rares.

Sell excess of 2 rares and legends to people for cash and use the cash to buy boosters to hopefully pull more legends....rinse and repeat.

To complete the playset you will need to buy a few legends from other players or online. If online, wait for the prices to come down...they alwyas do. This is not MTG, prices only fall in Destiny.

I myself bought mostly 4 Booster boxes per set. This left me with 0 rare and 3 legendaries missing from the complete single set (EoW, the others were similar). Also since I like to play the game I almost have a complete double set of all commons to rares, missing very few which I can easily trade for. Legendaries is always a little more difficult and depends on the luck of draw. In SoR I got 4 Force Speeds. That set was very easy to complete, since I could trade those 2 in excess for something like 6 other legendaries. In EoW I miss the ancient lightsaber ... but got 4 of Mace and 4 Chopper ... will see how I finish the set. Already got trades for 2 of the missing legendaries set up, so only AL to go ;).

Singles is also a good and easy way to complete sets but also, depending on Card, quite expensive at times. So far I do not see Prices fall a lot on Singles market except for the time when the 1st print run was very low and supply was not settled yet.

It comes down to how much you want to invest (and I think it's good to look at it as an investment in terms of money vs enjoyment). I think I ended up buying three boxes of the first two sets and two boxes of EaW plus occasional prize packs, and ended up with most of the stuff I wanted. Trading (and some freebies from a friend) filled in a lot of the rest. Getting complete set though would potentially cost a fair bit more (or require buying expensive singles), but I felt like I had enough to do most of what I'd want to do (having the ability to borrow off friends is potentially another factor to consider).

Ultimately, you definitely don't need the entire set and all legendaries to be competitive. You can trade hard for the ones you want (or buy them) and make out cheaper - but if you want 'all the toys' you'll need to buy more, either to try and get them, or to get spares to trade for the stuff you want. One other important thing is, of course, how much the theme matters to you. Do you want 'character x' because it's character x, or are you happy without having all the main characters etc. E.g. I've never watched Rebels so have no attachment to the characters theme wise, but you can bet I was chasing Chewie in SoR and would have possibly bought boxes more if I hadn't pulled two copies of him.

In terms of Boosters, you generally want to try to buy boxes over individual packs, because there's a set amount of Legendaries and unless you know what's come out of a box you might be pulling duds. Of course if you know people haven't pulled many Legendaries from a box and there's only a few packs left, well...that's the time to strike. Otherwise singles is a very viable option for most cards, but can get pretty ridiculous for 'chase' cards that everyone wants (or are main characters). Trading is often a good option that can benefit both parties, but obviously involves you being comfortable in dealing with the local or online community.

If you HAVE to own everything, Team Covenant sells complete sets at the cost of about 3 boxes.

How would I get a hold of this Team Covenant? I haven’t ordered any EaW boxes, so this might be the way to go.

Unfortunately, you have to pre-order the Team Covenant sets. If there's a notable reprint of a set, they may take additional orders (they call them Saga sets).

You get 2 of ever common, uncommon, and rare, and 1 of each legendary in a saga set, and they ship some time after the set releases. And it looks like they are taking orders now on a second wave of Empire, so if you want to go this route you can still jump on.

Failing that, as above, buying 3-4 boxes is your fastest way to build a collection from a set. I have 3 boxes of EaW, did not get a full set of Rares, and have 13 of the 17 legendaries.

If money is no object you'l be able to get everything just by watching the secondary market. The Team Covenant option is the way to go if you can spend the money in one purchase.

Buying boxes is, IMO, a poor way to collect. In my area, for example, the stores are always shorted on their order so can only get in 1 or 2 boxes per set and one person typically manages to grab all of them. I was only able to get one box of EaW locally and the collation was terrible (only 4 ultra-rares and only one named character in the entire box). While that isn't typical it can be hard to invest $100 in a box knowing that you can be so majorly shorted; you can't build decks if you don't get characters.

Just an FYI, the Team Covenant Saga Set only comes with one each of the legendaries, so you won’t really have a full set.

For Empire at War, for example, with the Saga Set, for $300 you get 17 legendaries, 86 rares, 86 uncommons, and 114 commons. For three booster boxes, which is $285 where I am, you get 18 legendaries, 90 rares, 108 uncommons, and 324 commons. I like trading anyway, so the boxes are usually more economical for me.

That seems to be a your area specific issue. Supply issues are not there with this set. You could go online right now and buy boxes at any number of stores. Most people can walk into a game shop and find product as well.

Are you saying you bought a sealed box with only 4 legendary cards?

That's correct.

TBH the best way is to look through all the cards in the set and just buy the singles you want to play with. Card games in general, and this game is no exception, have a lot of filler cards that never see play. Buying boxes will give you some cards you will play with and many filler. You are better off just specifically buying the cards you want. However Legendary prices are high right now for EAW. Wait a month and they will come down. Rare prices aren't bad but they will come down further as more and more boxes are opened to get at the legendaries. The biggest price swing though will come from the Legendaries. some of which aren't worth owning.
