I'm just curious, has anyone done the math on how the two sides of the core set match against each other?
Either piece by piece (Vader vs. Luke, stormtroopers vs rebel troopers etc) or overall?

I haven't quite gone that far. I did a video and spreadsheet to look at the stats behind the dice, I included a few very small set of examples but there are so many variables in the end that I wouldn't want to do more.

- It is a video about a spreadsheet, perhaps not the most exciting! There is a link to my spreadsheet which may help.

Thanks. I've also started doing my own spreadsheet stuff, but it gets pretty complex rather quickly (only did for basic Stromtroopers vs. Rebels so far, and Rebels seem to win pretty handily).
Well, if you ask an X-Wing player they will tell you FFG hates the empire so don't bother playing them. A Destiny player will say FFG loves it's villains.
The truth is, it is just the core. We have to wait and see what the first wave of expansions are like. I am sure their intention is balance but we all know by now there is no balance in the force.

Never tell me the odds!

Even aiming stormtroopers vs dodging rebel troopers?

Stormtroopers can aim?

4 Aiming Stormies deal about 1 damage average to dodging Rebels. Dodging Rebels deal about 1.5 to the Stormies.
This is just basic math, obviously. Since both shots remove models, who shoots first will have a pretty big impact, since the enemy won't retaliate at full strength.
It's actually closer than it looks, because you aren't factoring in crits and their effects on cover and the like.
Thanks to aim re-rolls, Stormies will be averaging about 33% more crits than dodging Rebels, (a unit of 6 scores an average 1.13 against the Rebels 0.75). That's considerably more reliable, so they can reliably plink hits onto units that should be almost impossible to hit....such as dodging or heavy cover.
The Rebels on the other hand are almost worthless against Stormtroopers in cover.
So it's really not as simple as just looking at one situation. There's a ton of variables to consider and Rebels don't beat Stormies handily unless it's the shootout at the OK Corral.
(I'm not criticising btw, you were clear it's just basic maths. Just showing why this is actually pretty complicated, especially once you add special weapons in).

My thoughts exactly
I've just started getting into the rules, and there's a lot of complex stuff to take into account for an accurate analysis.
Another thing that jumped out to me while doing a more in-depth read of unit cards: Luke can be suppressed, while Vader cannot. Given the penalties for losing your commander, how big of a deal do you expect this to be?
No idea so far, but it's certainly a plus point for Vader. It'll take a bit more info before we know how much of one, but being able to always freely act without penalty with your commander (and in Vaders case probably most powerful model) seems like a big deal.
