Unlimited Power -- Sourcebook for Mystics

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

That's what I thought... the tone just seemed to me like it was a given and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing it somewhere. Tks.

What's wrong with the warden spec in "keeping the peace" (a.k.a. the Guardian book)?

Warden is more of a social based spec surprisingly (Well, based mainly around intimidation and scaring other people) that has a few melee/unarmed abilities in it.

I am more thinking something closer to the Martial Artist just with one or two force talents in places, so having it be more focused on being unarmed melee fighter.

What it takes aside low morality to be 'dark side.' If one looked at the non-canon history of the Sith, there's alchemy, philosophy, the species, homeworld, phantasms (which may be in the core book), society, and other Sithy things. For example in D&D if I play a lawful evil character, I know per the rules what it takes to do so. Dark side in FFG is lightly explained, am I supposed to play douchebag evil and murder hobo everything? Am I supposed to be more cunning and manipulative? How long until a group falls apart due to how a dark sider is? I've never read the WEG books, but the Saga edition has a plethora of Sith classes laid out and explained how they're to be used. While there's no 'right way' to play a dark side PC, FFG's system is severely lacking in any way to play one aside my number is too small. Expanding on this could make for some super cool group dynamics, additional classes and in turn source books, equipment, abilities, etc. Thankfully one thing FFG did do properly imo was to make force powers, force powers with no bearing on light or dark.

What is missing for dark side rules?

Hmm hmm hmm...something I noticed. With the recent talk about a secondary Lightsaber spec, I was thinking...maybe it'll be the Alchemist?

I know, I know, on the surface that seems strange. But consider: the announcement article does mention that lightsabers are basically a very minimal kind of Alchemy, putting the Force into the Lightsaber to make it work. Most of the heavy lifting is probably done in the creation of the kyber crystals, which is generally not done by the wielder but by nature/the Force, but still. Lightsabers are alchemical, if only just. So...maybe?

You know that's not too outlandish, because nothing else really sounds like a lightsaber spec, Magus and Prophet sound like a Caster and a Talker. Alchemist I guess could take up the sword.

I hope its magus thats the lightsaber spec. Maybe using lightsaber in conjunction with force powers.

I hope they really good all our weird with alchemist, like kotor weird.

I hope both alchemist and prophet have conflict talents.

Hm i dont realy see my idea fitting in one of the three names given to the specs, but fitting to the mystic could have been a monch like fighting spec, maybe a little bit like the blind guy in R1

edit: maybe smth like "Spend two strain after you attacked with a lightsaber to do a difficult brawl attack immediatly" "you can use your force rating instead of your brawn for lightssaber"

Lightsaber spec could also be like Armourer, where it is a skill, but doesn't really come into many talents.

Or like Protector which gives you several saber-based talents but not the skill.

By "secondary Lightsaber spec" I meant similar to the likes of the Arbiter, Armorer, Sentry, and possibly Executioner: a source that has a secondary combat focus, likely has the Lightsaber skill, and has a few Lightsaber talents, while still having a different, primary focus.

Most all careers so far released have one (the only possible exception, depending on your opinion, is the Executioner), so it's logical to assume that the Mystic will, too. And to me, the Alchemist seems the best fit, what with lightsabers actually being a minor alchemical item, according to the description.

But maybe I'm getting overly focused on the first possibility I see. That doesn't sound like me at all!

Also, have you guys realized that this entire discussion is talking about the ACTUAL NAMES OF THE ACTUAL SPECS OF THE ACTUALLY ANNOUNCED ACTUAL MYSTIC BOOK?!? EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Yeah I noticed when it wasn't Warrior... (Exits stage left.)

Aww, sorry Shlam :( . We'll get there! I promise!

While she beta tests the warrior book while mutteri.g about how she should be beta testing the mystic book...

Umm...no comment. *Shifty Eyes*

How does one become a play tester?

Alchemist being a craftsman/intellectual character makes sense to me. Being able to infuse the Force into creations would be the signature, as well as mixing chemicals. Probably some ranks of Inventor, maybe Bacta Specialist (YMMV), maybe Knowledge Specialization. I can see it working very well with Artisan, Sage, and hopefully Healer. Maybe Education, Mechanics, Medicine, Xenology? A bit Intellect heavy, though.

Magus could be a combat character that solely or primarily uses the Force. Sage and Seer can do that, but neither are particularly themed for that. I would actually prefer if it didn't have a second rank in Force Rating. Discipline seems highly likely, as well as Lore. Maybe it will introduce Force of Will back into F&D.

Prophet being social makes sense. A bit of Charm and Leadership, with Education and Lore, perhaps? A rank or two of Congenial would be ideal, along with Works Like a Charm.

I basically just asked, and used my extensive forum activities making calculations and reviewing and providing insight on rules as my "resume," as well as my extensive history as a board and RPG gamer.

Word to the seeker, though: It's not JUST Star Wars stuff. I've been wanting to get into the gaming industry for a while, and my gaming group was willing to go it alongside me. Most of what we've tested has been new board games, staring with the (incredibly awesome!) Twilight Imperium IV that's almost here.

It's a lot of fun, but a lot of work, and since my gaming group has been unable to meet at all recently, we actually haven't been doing much of any testing.

That would be awesome, my group of friends loves just having Board game nights. Especially D&D. FaD and X-wing. I'm up for anything really, just the only problem would be we meeting since we are busy.

I'm super excited for this, though I'm already hating the wait.

YOU'RE hating the wait? The existence of the Mystic career in the F&D Beta book was the catalyst that got me to actually follow this system! I'm literally in it for the Mystic :P !

Okay, maybe not 100%, but still. Every single Star Wars character I've ever played throughout my entire roleplaying career fits perfectly into this one career, so...yeah. Not that I doubt you're excited, but I have feeling there are few as excited about this as I am. Seriously, I still squee randomly every couple of hours thinking about it.

...I may have a problem...

Yea, my favorite character is also a mystic and has strayed far from his original class in the absence of a supplement.

Taking the idea of alchemy being used to influence one's Lightsaber crystal and running with it, perhaps none will have Lightsaber as an outright skill, but the Alchemist will possess talents that allow them to imbue Force energy into their crystal and direct it into strengthening their attacks/providing bonuses. Anything from 'roll a Force check, add damage equal to FP' through to a permanent addition, in the manner of Jury Rig. Though there's always the possibility of insane unbalancing through that.

There's a lightsaber in nexus of power that can ignore the cortosis quality because of a coating applied to the crystal... I wouldn't be surprised if the alchemist good replicate that, but I wouldn't bet that it would be included either.
