What is HOTAC?

By papy72, in X-Wing

Forgive my newbish ignorance, but I keep seeing references to HOTAC but can't find what it means. Can someone please fill me in?

Heroes of the aturi cluster.

Fan made coop campaign, with ai sheets for the enemy using dice. There is a thread in here somewhere

Ah, ok. Thanks!

If you haven't, go and give it a try. It's got its zits and pimples, but it's a beautiful game nonetheless.

Fan made coop campaign where you each fly one rebel fighter against an AI of Imperial ships.

I highly recommend it as a supplement for traditional x-wing, because it's a way to get all your old iconic ships on the table without using Biggs or being floored every round by new stuff.

I dunno, i always found some of the difficulty stepups pretty steep depending on the number of players and mission.

For instance 4 players seems to be really rough....

What do you find is the sweet-spot?

I'm getting ready to start a new campaign.

HoATC is love. HoATC is life.

3 or 5 seems good. avoid the trigger numbers for stepup up in threat.

Our play group just ran with whoever showed up, drop in drop out per mission. My other piece of advice is recommend at least somebody runs with ion. There are missions in there that are **** near impossible without it.

HotAC X-wing is best X-wing.

I'll add that it's a fantastic way to introduce new players to the game. They get to fly iconic ships, it's co-op, so noobs don't get stomped by veteran players, and each new player only has one ship to worry about flying.

I would argue that it's not the best way. It's a good way, sure and it has key advantages such as using iconic ships. I agree that it is more new player friendly at first.... Until the ships get really complicated with multiple pilot talents.

Some of the new ships kinda break it as well. The missions weren't designed for everyone to have Sabine bombs, K-Wings, ARC-170s, TLTs, and Expertise.

But yeah, HotAC is the way to go! It's awesome!

And I always thought that it stood for Homeboys of the Atari Console.

Actually the ARC170 doesn't really break the game. It's the other abilities and cards that have come out since (not to mention the other ship chassis). It's probably the only "as is" safe ship for the game.

It's an air conditioning unit with no refrigerant or a filter in need of replacing

Well my group just got 2 ARC-170's (yes I am flying one) and so far they haven't broken the game, we just did scrap by on our first mission with them... Now K-Wings we haven't gotten yet, but overall HoTAC is awesome.

Many of the new ships need high XP cost, so their worth is upset by opportunity cost of never reaching PS9.

And it's AWESOME!

Yeah there needs to be a scum addition much like how Imperial assault has both Scum and Imperial villains.

I've taken part in seven HotAC campaigns so far, including one recently started, and here's my advice (not that anybody actually asked):

(1) Play by the book. You'll feel pressure, both internally and externally, to expand the rules of the campaign to new ships and upgrades. If you're new, and maybe even if you're not, play by the book. Josh Derksen playtested the **** out of the campaign as written, which is only up through Wave 7. Yes, there are things that could be safely changed (e.g., there's no real balance reason a player can't start in an A-wing), but for the most part the campaign is balanced very, very well on the conservative side. Similarly, a lot of fans have put a lot of work into additional content. I haven't used it, but every time I read someone asking why the missions are too easy for them in their ARC-170s, E-wings, and T-70s, I just kinda shake my head. I'm fairly sure a lot of it is playtested and well-balanced, but I'm 100% certain the core campaign is playtested and well-balanced.

Exceptions!

(2) Pool XP. Calculate it normally, then divide it by the number of players. This just reinforces the cooperative nature of the campaign. (In my games, we give out the remainder XP to those people who have fallen behind the XP curve, due to losing upgrades or rolling lost XP on pilot survival checks.)

(3) Ban or raise the price on TLT. In our most recent iteration, we made it 9 points, and neither Y-wing took it. They still might, eventually, but at least it'll be several missions in. As a bonus, those Ion Cannon Turrets have really done some work! I'd forgotten how good they can be.

(4) Allow Integrated Astromech without costing a Mod slot, but if used, the astromech has to be bought again.

(5) Always appoint someone to make rulings during games, and you should usually appoint someone who will rule in favor of the Imperial AI. For example, I don't think there's a rule on how far forward or back a TIE will barrel roll, but should a TIE barrel roll forward into a Range 1 shot, instead of accepting a lateral barrel roll and a Range 2 shot? Yes. Yes, it should.
