TIE Sentinel, likeliehood and potential?

By Vector, in X-Wing

The TIE Sentinel is one variant that seems unlikely to be considered any time soon due to its minor appearance in Legends, however what is the possibility do you think that it may one day appear in X-Wing and how effective it could be in combat and in comparison to other TIEs?

The Sentinel had two mounted turrets: one under the head and another on the top close to the rear.

Whilst the ship did appear in the Legends game Star Wars Galaxies, its appearance was only as a painting known as the Emperor's Eyes which players could acquire.

Not much else is known about its full capabilities but that could be left open to interpretation, especially for FFG if they were to use it for the game. It could be pitted as the Imperial equivalent to the Rebel K-Wing.

As a title for the Agressor

From a practical standpoint there's really no reason to slap turrets onto an agile spacecraft. Turrets exist on the assumption that enemies are going to outmaneuver you. Whatever, it's StarWars.

That's why there are only two, very rare, examples.

Yes, I do like this ship, but it would probably not come soon (if at all), considering it has only appeared in one image. Ever.

TIE Sentinel is to TIE Aggressor what TIE Punisher is to TIE Bomber. Typical EU escalationism and lazy design.

"TIE Aggressor Only. Your upgrade bar loses 2 missile upgrade icons and gains 1 additional turret upgrade icon."

Custom play to your heart's delight. I doubt this will ever be a thing, and I hope it never is. Turrets have a thematic place in the game, and they are necessary for balance to degree, but we are way beyond turrets for balance at this point. A ship with 2 turret upgrades is one more nail in Soontir's coffin. #makearcdodginggreatagain

A ship with two turret upgrades is a ship that wastes the points for one turret upgrade

Double edge would be in love with that title :-)

Personally i would replace the missiles by something like a crew, system or tech slot. Make it a unique title and for ps 5+ for balance reasons. Or to really go crazy, replace the missiles by 2 bomb slots. That would be soooo awesome :-).

Well, maybe something high-tech, such as linking the gun facing to the pilot's helmet (compare AH-64 nose turret).

Maybe something like that could make it into Canon fluff as some sort of First Order high-tech-shenannigans. In a visually more pleasing form, though, please.

More like a concept art for the Tie Agressor. Don't need that !

TLT, Accuracy Corrector and Autoblaster Turret would tend to disagree

Turrets exist on the assumption that fixed guns can only point in one direction at a given time.

You are right, though I hope that TLT is nerved to range 1-2 bevor we see an Aggressor fix.

Largely because rotating weapons on an outward mount is incredibly poor for good aerodynamics and supersonic performance in general, in addition to serious airframe stress. Just try to put an Apache's gun on an F-22, see how long it stays on.

If we could put non-fixed weapons on our fighters we absolutely would. Subsonic craft can get away with not being terribly aerodynamic, they're not built for speed specifically. If you're building a Helo for speed and making it as swoopy-aerodynamic as you can, you might not be designing an attack Helicopter, like a Hind or Apache.

Apaches don't have turrets because they get outflown. They have turrets to provide accurate ground support on a generally unstable platform. This turret allows various high speed strafing maneuvers to the crew as well.

TIE Sentinel (title, TIE Aggressor only)

lose all Missile upgrade slots.

your primary weapon attack can now target ships outside your primary arc.

done.

Why isn’t this in th Uglies topic?

Because it's not an Ugly.

That's the wrong range nerf. TLT should be either range 2 only, or range 3 only. Make the ships actually have to maneuver around the board if they want a shot, rather than just have to physically exist somewhere on the board.

It sure fits the definition. Take one TIE Advanced, unnecessarily chop off some of the wings, add turrets from the Aggressor, make it extremely rare. Yup, it’s an ugly. At least as much as this thing

I feel like this is behind the Hunter, Oppressor, and possibly even Avenger in the queue of TIEs likely to get added to the game.

That said, if added, I would expect it to be just like the K-Wing. A PWT that also has a Turret upgrade.

And being a PWT TIE would itself make it pretty unique.

Except that's just what it looks like, not what it is.

By the same token, you could say the chop the wings of an Interceptor, and put 3 of them on backwards, and the Defender is an Ugly.

Yes it is! Well, maybe more of a Derivative than an Ugly, because Defenders are so pretty.

Hey, don't be so hard on the BBW Bomber, stress from her work caused her to be that way.

I kid. I love the BBW girl, she’s my second favorite TIE next to Bomber. She’s Bomber +++. Would by my favorite if she HAD AN EPT. Come on FFG, why the FAQ did you do that? Was it gonna be OP? Deadeye on a Punisher, no we can’t have that!

BBW TIE Punisher. Sounds like a personal ad or description on Fetlife. (Fett Life? Oh no....)

I prefer the Punisher over the Bomber because asymmetry irks me.

But the asymmetry totally sold me on the Bomber 38 years ago! So original and functional! Love it love it love it! Not like that princess, TIE Interceptor. Look, I’m exactly the same as TIE Fighter but my wings are pointy! And have pew pew guns on them! Wee!
