Encounter cards - new/variation cards of existing sets

By Dice lord, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Pretty new to this game but curious if any expansions to date add new encounter cards to existing encounter sets I.e. Do any Mythos pack add in new Ghoul Cards (as an example) or are they always new sets?

It would be great if expansions add in some additional variation to the core set scenarios in addition to providing the cards for the scenario in the pack.

They're always new sets (new scenarios can always use pre-existing sets - though only from the core and the campaign's box, so players aren't forced to buy everything). However, sometimes existing cards can be found in new sets, combined with other cards: for instance, Rotting Remains from the Striking Fear set can be found in a set from the Dunwich cycle.

Ok, thanks.

I do hope we'll see new encounter cards with old encounter set markings to add more variety for 'older' scenerios. Seems a more interesting approach I guess than just reprints of existing cards.

Well, that would mean changing already published scenarios, so I doubt it'll happen...

True, although only in the same way as adding in new player cards changes how a scenerio is played; this is surely a good thing.

I can see how adding cards into the encounter deck alters the likelihood of drawing certain cards which may mess things up but say a pack comes out with 3 new cards that have the Rats set icon; the core set Rats encounter set has 3 cards so the pack rules could say 'when you add the Rats set, shuffle all these cards from your collection and draw three, return the other cards to the box'.

The odds are unchanged and I might get to play with a different mix of cards, which currently isn't possible (as I understand it) as the encounter sets are always the same.

This is just a lot of added complexity for little extra benefit.

I could see them making something akin to Nightmare packs like in LotR where they release a bunch of new encounter sets to slot into older campaigns to spice things up. They could have new symbols but have some of the other cards, and come with a new campaign guide telling you where to add them or what sets to replace.

I'm not familiar with LOTR but that sounds interesting.

I love this idea (I also love the Nightmare Decks) and I guess it would be easy enough to produce.

New encounter sets could also be used to create alternative endings, like at the end of the Night of the Zealot campaign where you randomly selected an encounter set to find out which Ancient One you were fighting.

I think the best way for the Nightmare decks would be just as an expansion for each cycle/Core Set. As the cycles are more integrated than in LotR, I think it works better. I think you could easily fit it into a POD pack. You could fit about 8-10 encounter sets, the only tricky part would be the campaign guide, but you could just release an online version.
