C3PO on Miranda....better crew instead?

By drail14me, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm running C3PO on Miranda. I mostly call Zero for rolls with 3PO to make sure I get an Evade. How would you call it at Range 3 with two green dice. Zero still seems the safest unless more evades are needed to stay alive.

Edited.....Now that I've read some replies and played a few more times, I'm wondering if using Jan Ors might be better. C3PO guarantees one evade. With Jan, you can take the Evade Token instead of the Focus and still be able to roll for a second Evade. So, for a squad point less, I'm still guaranteed an Evade with a chance for a second. Through my play style, I've noticed I often have my focus token unused in the End phase. So, why not have Jan to turn it into a useful Evade.

That's about right.

On 2 green dice, you have a 39% chance of 0 evades, a 47% chance of 1 evade, and a 14% chance of 2 evades. The difference 0 and 1 is pretty small, and it's kind of this: would you rather be guaranteed to reduce the number of incoming hits by 1, or half the time reduce the hits by 2. With Miranda's natural regeneration, it's probably better to have the consistent results.

Sometimes, you'll want to embrace the variance. If you have hit-crit coming in against no shields, maybe you want to guess 1, to have a bigger chance of preventing a crit.

I'm a Lando man myself=:) When those 2 evades come out Miranda is golden.

The question is problematic, because when you have to guess, you know how many hits and crits your opponent scored, so the question should be, "when defending against X hits and Y crits, what would you guess with C-3PO?". And even then I would have to ask "does Miranda have a focus and how many hull and shields does she have left?". These things is importent to know to answar your question, because the answar depends on these circumstances.

Yes, it really is a situational question.

Now that I've read some replies and played a few more times, I'm wondering if using Jan Ors might be better. C3PO guarantees one evade. Jan Ors is better for pure defense. She's a guaranteed evade each turn. While he's only 5/8ths of an evade when rolling 1 die, C-3P0 lets you spend a focus token offensively.

I do not think Jan is better because, there is a lot of times, when you can not use her. When you are stressed, when you bump, when you drop action bombs and when something forbids you using or taking it (ex. Carnor Jax, Homing missile, Omega Leader, Damaged Sensor Array etc.), then you can not use Jan, but you would have been able to use C-3PO, because it does not require an action or function as a token. Futhermore you can potentially get as many evades with C-3PO as with Jan if you guess maximum and even better you can take a focus guess 0 evades, get one plus the number of rolled focusresults. Another time when C-3PO is better is if you find out, that you are not being attacked after you have taken your action - like when a higher PS ship could have attacked you but did not, then you can use your focus for attacks and Jans evade would have been worthless. Now lets look at the statistics

If we just look at some situations, where Miranda is attacked and must roll one defence die

You guess 0 with C-3PO, take a focus and roll
In 3/8 circumstances you roll a blank, which results in 1 evade
In 2/8 circumstances you roll a focus, which results in 2 evade (using the focus token)
In 3/8 circumstances you roll an evade, which results in 1 evade
Average evades: 1.25

You use Jan to preform an evade
In 3/8 circumstances you roll a blank, which results in 1 evade (using the evade token)
In 2/8 circumstances you roll a focus, which results in 1 evade (using the evade token)
In 3/8 circumstances you roll an evade, which results in 2 evade (using the evade token)
Average evades: 1.375

Thats a difference of (1.375-1.25=0.125) 12.5% of the time, where Jan is better. Now lets look at a situation, where Miranda rolls two dice:
(B=Blank, F=Focus, E=Evade)

Difference between C-3PO guess of 1 and Jan on two evade dice is (1.75-1.72=0.03) 3% in favor of Jan, but C-3PO with focus is better on 3 dice - Trust me or do the math yourself ;)

You can of cause argue, that Jan can also be used on other ships and cost one point less, but based on all these considerations I prefere C-3PO. Whatever you choose this hopefully helps you decide :)

One thing your post did do was make me realize I've been playing C3PO wrong. I was CHANGING the die instead of adding an Evade. So, I changed a Focus roll when instead, I should have added an Evade and spent a Focus token to change the Focus to an Evade.

Your math shows me that it's pretty dead even on Jan or C3PO. I like the 1 point bid Jan would give but having that Focus for offense is nice too. I'm going to play C3PO correctly in the next game then try Jan in the next couple games after and see how she does.

well it's not even. If you get blocked, stressed, or you can't perform an action for any reason, or spend the evade token, Jan is useless, while C3po is still working.

For 1 point i'll get the droid anytime, except if i'm planning on giving the evade on some other ship, say Biggs, in the early game. Jan is more for squad combo, while C3po is better for the single ship.

IMO, Rey is the best crew option for Miranda.
